Okay, I definitely do need to read those books again! I do remember the analogy between daemons in Lyra’s world and souls in Will’s, but I’d completely forgotten that animal-daemons showed up for Will and Mary.

Lee Scoresby meets John Parry (aka the shaman Grumman/Jopari), Will’s father, who accidentally entered Lyra’s world and acquired an osprey as a daemon.
Thanks–that certainly expands on the answer to the question, and my memory of the books was quite wrong. (I’m not caught up with the show–that’s the entry of Andrew Scott, right? I wonder if I’ll be able to forget his Moriarty…)
