History of the SDMB, Part 1

I just saw that the poster “Thought” was banned. I am very new to the board, and I was wondering how these people got banned. Anyone wanna fill in the newcomer? What egregious SDMB sins did these people commit? How can I NOT get banned? Thanks for all of the help from everyone.
::Genuflects to the great posters::

Rumor is that he was a sockpuppet. But in all reality its giving far too much attention to the damn trolls.

A palindrome: nimle. THAT WHICH CANNOT BE NAMED.

You may want to take this thread as a hint. Not exactly analogous to any recent events that may or may not have occurred around here; but I found it rather ironic that this particular topic arose so innocently on this message board.

Thought was the most recent incarnation of a former (banned) poster known first as OgreFade, the The Urge. When someone is banned (a relatively rare occurence) they are not allowed to simply change names and return. Once the subterfuge is uncovered, the newest incarnation is banned. Although sometimes people can be forgiven past transgressions and permitted to return, but only if they ask nicely beforehand.

The following behavior has led or could lead to posters being banned.

Screwing with the SDMB software
Having multiple usernames
Ignoring warnings that your behavior is offensive to the managment of the SDMB
Infringing on copyrights, especially those of the Straight Dope or Chicago Reader
Threatening the SDMB or its representatives with physical violence or legal action
Advocating criminal actions
Revealing off line personal information about another poster
Posting commercial messages, chain letters, or other spam
Claiming that Marilyn Vos Savant is smarter than Cecil Adams
Asking about “gry”
Advocating the commission of any of the above actions

Doghouse Reilly- I don’t seem to understand. I was just interested in the history of the board. The blood runs deep around here.
Little Nemo- Thanks for the list. I wouldn’t dare do any of those things now that I know. And Unca Cece is smarter than everybody, maybe even God!

By the way, I knew about the hacking thing. Who did it, and how were they caught? Just curious. Not like I’m gonna hack into the system. I like you guys too much!

I don’t get it. Where’s the palindrome? Isn’t a palindrome something which can be spelled backwards to read the same thing(i.e. Otto; May a moody baby doom a yam[from a Bela Fleck CD])

I think Doghouse confused palindrome with anagram.

Switch the letters around, and you get “meli-” wait, I’d be safer saying ‘hastur’ 3 times.

In the beginning, Cecil Adams created the Straight Dope.
And the earth was a void of ignorance, and darkness was upon the minds of the people. And Cecil said “Let there be a column, and let this column seperate the Urban Legend from the fact. Let this column teach many what the calorie content of sperm is, and whether cats have belly buttons or not.” And he saw that the Dope was good.

Years later, Cecil gave us the Books, containing all worthwile human knowledge, and then, his blessed wisdom gave us this board, where we worship Him with our minds and MPSIMS. He comes down not often from his lofty mount, and when he does, it is cause for celebration.

Through our faith in Him, we have survived many trolls and countless threads on gun control and abortion. Many have fallen by the wayside, but we shall not falter. We remember His commandment, “Go ye unto the world teaching the ignorant where all of the baby pigeons are, and leading them to the mental salvation of the Dope.”
Any other questions?

You’re right. Duh!

Lissa, you forgot the show in there somewhere.

That is what hooked me. Caught it on a fluke one nite surfing channels and never missed a show until they got taken off the air. If I remember correctly it was on A&E on sundays. I wish they would bring that back, I really liked Mike spreading the great Uncles’ words through the magic of television.
When they took it off I had to run out and get the books, and then we got the magic of the internet and I was able to meet all you fine folks.
Yeah, I know I did it all a little backwards, but I made it here and that is all that matters!

[hijack]Ooh! I love palindromes! Anyone read “Sit On a Potato Pan, Otis!”? It’s a howl!

My favorite palindrome is “Bolton”. That, and “Pinin’ fer the fjords”.
