Speaking of dreams, has anyone else ever hit the ground in the falling dream? I’ve hit at least three times that I can think of, and as far as I know I’m still alive. Just thought I’d dispell that myth about dying if you hit for anyone who might be afraid of it.
(I’ve also been killed in my dreams - that really sucked. I don’t recommend it.)
Haven’t done either, featherlou.
I always wake with a shaking of the bed at the point of impact.
When I was younger, I used to think I was levitating in my sleep.
My youthful logic was I would lose the ability to levitate upon waking and I’d come crashing down causing the bed to shake.
But I really can fly!
I’ve hit the ground at least once a month for as long as I can remember. I’ve also been shot, stabbed and bitten by a vampire and a werewolf multiple times.
I’ve never gone splat but I have caught myself howling at the moon while biting Mr. Congo on the neck
I’ve hit the ground. Usually it starts off really intense-- the feeling of falling is fuckin’ scary!-- but when I hit the ground, I bounce, and it becomes a slow-motion thud-thud-thud. Then I wake up totally freaked out and glad to be alive.
In one dream I fell off a cliff, died, and became a ghost. Strangely, it was an overall upbeat dream. I even had a nice conversation with a little girl as a ghost.
I’ve been killed in several dreams as well. One time I even died(drowned), and spent a while in some heaven/afterlife.
It really sucks, it seriously took me about two days to get my mind straight again after going through the shit of accepting the fact I was dead, only to wake up a find it not true. That is really freaky shit.
That’s exactly it, wolfman - getting your head straight after a dream like that. You wake up and are all disoriented and have to pull everything together again.
congo, I was queen of the underworld in a dream once. That was cool.
I’ve also fallen down and lived, I do not remember the setup, but I was falling from 1000 feet and headed towards a grassy hill, there was a dull sound and I bounced up a few feet and began to roll down the hill. No pain, but I figured I was dead, then I woke up. Curiously, I did not freak out.
I also survived a gun shot in a different dream, once again no pain, funny thing is: I realized it was a dream, but I could not control the dream like I do many times. All of the sudden, I was in an operating table and the surgeon brought a weird looking device to remove the bullet. I was still merrily thinking that since this was a dream nothing bad would happen to me. Then the doctor suddenly punched the tool to my chest…
AAAAAUUUUUAUAUUAAUAUAAOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW!!!
(I still remember that was one of the worse pains I have ever had!)
Woke up then looking frantically for where the gun shot was. That freaked me out for weeks…
I rarely remember my dreams - but I’ve driven off of cliffs at least twice and hit the ground in my dreams. But then the dream stalls… (I don’t think my head knows what to do with having died).
The closest I’ve come to being killed is being burned at the stake - but I think I may have woken up before it ended.
I’m exactly the same when I hit the ground up until the thud-thud-thud part. Instead of doing that I bounce really soft and high, like the world is a giant trampoline. I typically bounce over telephone wires (and by over them I mean to about one and a half to two times their height), which I guess is my brain giving me a reference point for how high I’m bouncing.
Had a dream a couple months ago where I was on the ground fending off a guy slashing at my face with a knife. I woke up and could feel the lines traced on my arms where I’d been cut for a day or two afterwards.
Also had a dream like some of you where I’ve hit the ground when falling. Was really weird since I slammed into the ground(no bouncing) and then the view switched to third person while I pushed myself up. Woke up a bit after that.
I wake up before I hit. It’s usually very startling. When I was on a higher level of anti-depressants my dreams were basically supressed. I couldn’t remember them and if I did it was just vague bits and pieces. Now I am on a lower dosage of anti-depressants and my dreams are more vivid. My biggest nightmares have been about flying which is something I don’t do and have great fear of. I have had dreams about being over water when the crash happens. Very scary.
I have also been laying in bed almost asleep not quite and heard my mothers voice as if she was in front of me saying my name. Just as clear as day. Enough to get me to bolt out of bed. She is still alive, so I don’t know what to make of that.
I don’t have falling dreams anymore, I’ve switched to explosions in my head. You wake up and you know the loud noise didn’t come from anywhere outside your ears and the flash was behind your eyes.
I did have a getting eaten by a shark dream after the first time I saw Jaws. I actually felt the teeth cut me in half. Took a while for me to watch another one of those movies.
Ok so I had a dream once where I was pushed off a cliff and I was falling and it so terrifying!! Then I hit he ground. For a few seconds it was the most painful thing I have a
ever been through!! Then I died. I rose up into the air extremely fast and then my vision was filled with light. Being a lucid dreamer, I actually thought I had died. I was greeted by everyone I know whom is dead including my goldfish I had when I was 7 and David Bowie. Then I was being sucked back down to Earth, all my dead spirit friends tried to pull me back up but they weren’t strong enough. I fell towards Earth and when I looked down I was being sucked back into my old body that was lying lifeless on the grass. Then I woke up. I think I actually went to heaven in my dream.
I had a dream where I was very unsteady on my feet. I woke up when I landed on the floor. I was perpendicular to my bed so I decided I felt unsteady because I had been walking on my bed in my sleep.
Eulalia: read about “Exploding Head Syndrome”. I have that at times, too
I have never dreamed that I could fly, but I have had dreams about falling. One that I remember was when I was about six years old. I had jumped out of a swing (at the high point in the arc, of course), but I couldn’t get my legs beneath me, so I bounced on my stomach.
Have had a few falling dreams usually amount to nothing but once I did hit the ground and every thing went black until I heard a beeping sound which turned out to be a heart monitor. I was in the hospital and could hear doctor describing my injuries but still just darkness. Then I awoke
I used to have falling dreams occasionally until one time out of desperation I decided to try to fly in my dream and discovered I could do it! I have had a few flying dreams since that time and have not experienced any falling dreams since that wonderful dream discovery.
I had a dream once where I woke up on top of a tall building. I realized I was dreaming, so I said to myself: “I’m going to jump off this building and wake myself up”.
Just as I was about to jump off, I hesitated and thought to myself: “Well… I did have a lot to drink last night. Waking up on a roof top doesn’t sound too outside the realm of possibility.”
I ultimately decided to err on the side of caution and chose not to jump.
