Hitchens: Chirac a "rat"

He wrote a book about her

The Missionary Position:Mother Teresa In Theory and Practice
Q: Do you think the title of the book might have contributed this? Could it have deterred certain people from even opening it up?

A: “It was a risk one ran. Once I thought of the title I realized I was gonna have to do it. I was very hurt by somebody describing the title as “sophomoric,” because it’s a triple entendre, which is not all that common. You have three layers of pun. I had wanted to call it Sacred Cow (laughter), but that would have had only one pun in it. The Missionary Position has two.”

An interview with Christopher Hitchens

… and later on, the inevitable defence

Spoofe is Chichen?

In fairness, Hitchens’s criticisms of Mother Teresa were/are based on fact. She was not the saint people came to portray her as.

I’ll try to be a good thread host. Here you go. < Two linked interviews on his book
I like the guy. He’s like Camille Paglia in the sense that you cannot pin him down on the left/right spectrum.

For those interested in some of his other writings:

I agree that he’s gone a bit overboard with his stance post 9/11, though he’s always an interesting and intelligent writer.
