I must admit that my knowledge of the Nazi party and its domestic policies (excluding the obvious) are pretty limited. On Thursday, my history professor mentioned how a lot of Nazi imagery was drawn from Scandinavian and German mythology. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him after class, so I turn to you guys. If I wanted to find out more, are there any defining books on the subject? I’m curious to see how it was used.
Hitler wasn’t really into the mythology but a lot of other high ranking Nazis were. Check into the history of the Thule Society.
The most obvious perhaps was the use of the swastika, an ancient symbol the Nazis used to link themselves to the Aryans.
The swastika was (and is) a Hindu symbol, not Scandinavian or Germanic. The OP specifically talked about Nordic mythology.
Did you even read the article I linked to? The symbol has been widely used throughout Eurasia, and goes back to prehistoric times in Europe. It is far from being merely a “Hindu” sign; and its presence in India is linked to the Aryans as well.
From the link:
Bolding mine; the swastika was a part of ancient German religious iconography.
One might also note the use of the swastika as a symbol by the Thule Society itself; see the link.
This might help you:
And here’s more on Nazi mysticism.
Danke shoen to all of you! What a great start. I think this’ll really whet my appetite.
I just found this by accident:

Maybe Colibri meant to guide you here. Anyway, you might wanna drop by the Axis History board - lots of details, and there’s a subforum for Nazi propaganda and culture.
Sorry about that; thanks for fixing it.
