I almost didn’t start this thread since this is an old story. But it’s in the news now, and I wouldn’t want to be accused of falling down on the job.
Last Friday, England’s Daily Mail ran this story about Hitler Fried Chicken opening in Bangkok, with Hitler’s face copied over Colonel Sanders of KFC fame. Other websites ran with the story such as here. When asked about the name, staff just said “the owners had thought it was good image.”
But as you can see here, it turns out the photo is two years old. And the location was not in Bangkok but rather Ubon Ratchathani province, over on the border with Laos. The name has been changed to H-ler Fried Chicken, and the logo image is different now too.
No idea why the Mail chose to run the story now, but it does point up the casual attitude Thais have to World War II and the Nazis. For more information on that, see my previous Thai Female Catholic Hitler Youth thread, heh. :D)
That’s disturbing to see that Hitler is catching on as a fashion trend, but also, well maybe he’s held the mantle of evil incarnate for long enough, and now he can be the mantle for cute teen girl apparel. He deserves it, at the very least.
I’ll tack this on as a side note rather than start a new thread. But a new controversy just popped up. Chulalongkorn University, Thailand’s top educational institute, has issued an apology “for a graduation mural in the middle of the campus that featured an image of former German dictator and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler among a host of comic book superheroes.” Story here.
