On the other hand, it’s a cool name, so I can’t decide.
Body Poetry has been the name of my business since I got started with my very first batch of soap. It was perfect then: all I made was soap, and I included poetry from a local poet in every wrapper. Cool name, unique, all of that.
Then I added candles, and even though candles are obviously not a body product, I kept the name and labeled everything “Body Poetry Candles.” So far, so good, except the poets hereabouts are notorious for not sending me poetry, and making wrappers has become more and more of a pain.
But now, I don’t know. Things have changed so much in my life that I’m not feeling so attached to my old name anymore. I started a new line of candles recently and called it the Persimmon Creek line. Very nice stuff–more unique jars, an entirely different look from my previous stuff. I’m considering adopting that look for my entire line, name and all.
Keep in mind that I’m not talking about a huge business here…I sell a few hundred candles per year, except for wholesale orders, which I private-label anyway (using the buyer’s business name and logo.)
So, whatcha think about this momentous decision? Go for it? Keep the old, nifty-but-no-longer-quite-comfy name? I’m changing everything else in my life, should this follow suit?
Of course, I shall remain, on the SD…
your beloved bodypoet
I love the Body Poetry name and the whole idea behind it. Could you perhaps seek out poets on your own and contact them for the use of their work, rather than waiting for them to contact you? Persimmon Creek is nice too, and much more homey, but Body Poetry is just so sensual sounding.
See, Vixenation, that’s exactly the thought process I go through, over and over…Oh, it’s a nice name, but Persimmon Creek is nice too! But, it’s such a NICE name! But…
I do contact the poets personally…they’re just very bad at remembering to send me their goods. I usually end up including my own poetry, and I don’t mind doing that, but it sort of defeats my goal of promoting other local poets.
I guess my main impetus is just that I’ve made so many changes in my life lately. I’m getting out of a bad marriage, re-doing the house (as much as possible with no money, heh), and undergoing a lot of emotional changes as well.
Why don’t you just pretend the poets are dead and rename your shop - ‘The Dead Poets Sudsiety’? I can already tell you think it’s a winner.
Wait a minute soap + candles = soapy candles (as I am sure the SDMB math guys will back up) Why do you not just come clean and re-name it ‘The Persimmon Creek Ye Olde Sex Shoppe’ ?
I LIKE Body Poetry. And candles, IMHO, fall nicely into that name…after all, candles are poetry for the soul, right? And your soul is part of your body. Or something like that.
In other words, what ivylass said so much more expressively.
And if you have an website, please email me the link. Scotticher@aol.com.
Body Poetry sounds very sensual, exotic, good groove kinda stuff.
Persimmon Creek…I like it alot. If I had a stately log cabin in the middle of no where, I would call it Persimmon Creek. Classy, down home, yet remains un-redneck/bubba-fied.
This is pure genius. Maybe do a line of smark alecky soaps. Kinda like this woman’s line
Which are cheeky and something I wish someone would buy me all of them
BTW, I like the idea of supporting local poets, but if/when you’re stuck for material, there’s a huge amount of public domain stuff you could use when you’re pressed for material.
Do you pay these poets for the stuff you put on the wrappers? I know your business is probably too small to have much of a budget for such a thing, but I’m betting they’d take deadlines much more seriously if they knew they’d be getting fifty bucks, or however much–I don’t know what the going rate is for soap-wrapper poetry.
I get it! I’ve wondered about your user name for ages and figured it must have something to do with dance. That or you were some sort of performance artist who wrote poetry all over herself. What? I’ve done that! It’s fun…
Anyway, I really like the name Body Poetry for your shop. Definitely somewhere I’d want to look around. Maybe you’d be able to scare up more poetry at the local university? Persimmon Creek is good for a line of products, very cozy sounding, but there are a lot of Creek Somethings out there, store-wise. Body Poetry is unique and memorable. Whew! My two cents and then some.
Hmmmm…okay, I must consider the advice of the Teeming Millions.
I do like Body Poetry as a name…it’s unique, fun, and a little enigmatic…perfect for soap and body products.
I could go with Persimmon Creek Candles, I suppose. I’m leaning toward a more primitive, homey look, and that works nicely. It’s just a little weird to try to put together a candle/soap set when one is called Body Poetry, and the other is called Persimmon Creek.
Then again, I don’t sell tons of sets, so I suppose it’s not a huge problem.
Thanks for all the brilliant ideas. Dead Poets Sudsiety, indeed…I love it!
