Hobbit DVD / BR announced

Note: There will be extended editions “around thw holidays”. You have been warned. I get mad when people complain about the LOTR extended DVDs, which I thought were well advertised.

Also:
Peter Jackson will host a live first look at “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” the second film in The Hobbit Trilogy, on Sunday, March 24th at 3:00PM Eastern/Noon Pacific. Content will be streamed live and an edited version will be archived on the Trilogy’s official website. Access to the live event will be limited to holders of an UltraViolet code available by purchasing “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"

So for buying the theatrical edition you get:
To watch it for 8-9 months before the extended edition
Watch the live preview of the second film.

I hope the extended edition is 9 hours long and includes a 3 hour scene of just the dwarves eating at Bag End. Just to piss people off.

I can wait and buy all three films, extended versions, when they come out in two years or so.

I thought The Hobbit was a GREAT film, so looking forward to the other two - and yes, as far as I am concerned, they can show them trimming their toenails for 20 minutes. I personally like the fact that Jackson is taking his time, adding depth and color and minor characters to fill the story.

But as mentioned, I will wait until all three films are out in a nice boxed set (like my LOTR collection) and purchase that and will enjoy every single minute - 400 hours as far as I am concerned - of the extended versions. I am a patient person and can wait, just as I am a patient person and can savor and enjoy all of the added material.

Maybe Jackson should make a 45 minute slash version of the combined three films for those nitpicking, naysayer purists who just want the action and only the exact words from the original (thin) book and screw all the back stories and character development. Maybe that would make them happy.

Heh, maybe Bombur will have a line in the extended edition.

I’m looking forward to it.

Who complains? Why?

That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates.

Each one of the LOTR extended editions was already a “nice boxed set” by itself. And I remember how empty Christmas vacation felt that first year there wasn’t a new LOTR DVD set to spend hours with.

I look forward to buying the extended edition around the holidays, so reminiscent of LOTR movie good times.

I didn’t like the Hobbit enough to see it multiple times in the theatre (though I’m glad I saw it there once). DVD will be good for skipping through parts I didn’t like.

I’ll be buying both versions - can’t wait.

When the extended edition of FOTR came out, some people complained that they just bought the regular edition*. IMHO New Line was straitforward with thier plans. They gave a date and a rough idea of what was going to be in the EE. I don’t rememeber if they gave a price.

*I can understand the sentiment. I fouind out about the EE edition of The Pricess Bride after gettting the base version. I do not know if it was announced beforehand. But the EE of LOTR was definitely announced prior to the base version.

Brian

For the LOTR stuff, I liked the editions with the statuettes in them. I’ve got them scattered around the house.

I would actually prefer that over three extra hours of “Let’s run while being chased by goblins.”

I’ll buy the EEs, when they come out, and by then it’ll be time to upgrade to a 4K TV.

Not much for DVDs. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but I don’t need to see it more than once. I might watch it again, for free, on cable, but they aren’t getting any more of my money for this.

If there’s a point where they all stop and have lunch, and trade some food with the goblins who are having their own lunch nearby, and then they ask if they’re ready to go before they all start running again…

I’m in.

Pretty sure that was already in the theatrical release.

I am going to wait for the extended editions and buy those, which is what I did with LOTR. I can’t imagine how much more extended The Hobbit will be, there wasn’t anything cut from the books. Added and changed, yes, but not cut. Maybe they will add some more Radagast filler. Regardless I will buy the EE’s and not the theatrical release. I loved the documentaries on the LOTR EE’s, and am looking forward to what will be on this version.

I’d buy the Lonely Mountain prologue extended to three hours. Can’t get enough Dwarfish goodness. Show me the story behind each of the dwarfs, them growing up, wacky prologue adventures, the story behind their beard styles…

No need for anything Elven, though. Screw those guys.

Are you testing material for your Catskills stand-up comedy routine?
This sounds too much like “The food here is terrible . . . and such small portions!

So many changes from the novel: take the Elves from Helm’s Deep . . . please!

Wounded in battle, Faramir was taken to the Houses of Healing. The Doctor gave him three days to live. Faramir couldn’t pay his bill, the Doctor gave him another three days!

Aragorn’s been in love with the same woman for 70 years, if Arwen ever finds out she’ll kill him!

Short summary of every Dwarf Holiday: They tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat!

Where do you hide gold from a dwarf? Behind his shaving kit!

Does anyone know offhand: in the EE of LOTR, is there a setting to play the theatrical version? For LOTR, I think there’s some stuff in the EE that are major missing sequences (death of Saruman, for example) but lots of just plain stretching sequences longer, which isn’t necessary. In THE HOBBIT, I can’t imagine anything in an extended edition that I’d want to see. I’ll buy it, just for the helluvit, but when I watch in future, I’ll want to do my own editing (and do fast-forward through Goblin Town, say.)

A few well timed naps?

bienville - I’m sorry my answer was so mockable. I simply meant that I will skip through the stone giants and goblin town sequences but look forward to behind the scenes material which will be available on the EE. Satisfied?

CK Dexter Haven - I don’t think there is a setting for theatrical edition on the LOTR EEs.
