In much the same vein as “Snakes on a Plane”, we have a similarly “honest” titled movie, Hobo with a Shotgun, and it’s not altogether horrible either, as long as you go in with zero expectations…
It’s a “Grindhouse” style 70’s era dystopian movie with gore effects taken beyond the humorous extreme, everyone in the movie must be suffering from extreme hypertension as they emit high pressure fountains of blood when mortally wounded or decapitated…
The film has us following an aged Rutger Hauer as the aforementioned HwaS, and his efforts to clean up the grimier side of the streets, it has a similar, but dramatically lower budgeted feel of the original Robocop, except with a homeless drifter instead of a cyborg cop.
The gore effects are amusing, and what little plot there is is meant to cause us to cheer for HwaS as he befreinds the typical “hooker with a heart of gold” and begins his vigilante rampage protecting her.
one of the problems of this film is that they take far too long establishing the dystopian world and the shotgun side of things only really comes into play roughly halfway in.
Overall, an enjoyable, mindless diversion, keep your expectations low and enjoy.
One thing that did bother me was the actor playing “Dutch”, the town’s criminal kingpin, he looked familiar, but I just couldn’t place him, you know that "I’ve seen him in other movies/TV, just not sure where, where do I know him from…
As I was watching the credits, I saw who it was…
Dutch - Brian Downey…
AHA! I KNEW I recognized his face, Brian Downey was “better” known for playing…
…Stanley Tweedle, Security Guard Class 4 and Captain of The Lexx!
Definitely playing against typecasting there, Stanley Tweedle was a self-centered, timid, self-serving little prick who only had two goals in life, protecting his own sorry skin, and getting it on with Xev/Zev Bellringer of B3K and failing miserably at every attempt.
If you want to see “Stanley Tweedle” with a backbone, give this cinematic diversion a look.
