Hormones in semen make women happier, study finds

WOMEN whose partners do not wear condoms are less likely to be depressed than those whose male partners use protection - and exposure to semen appears to be the reason, new research has revealed.

American scientists have studied the link between mood and sperm and concluded that women who were directly exposed to it were less depressed.

They believe the mood-altering hormones in semen, such as testosterone, oestrogen and prolactin, absorbed through the vagina, are the factor affecting mood.

Mr Gallup stressed he was not advocating unprotected sex. “Clearly an unwanted pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease would more than offset any advantageous psychological effects of semen,” he said.

I read a good article about this on salon.com that looked at some of the shortcomings of the study. There are so many factors in determining a person’s happiness that to simply say it’s because of one thing is a little silly. There are some results that are very interesting and bear further study, but the matter is hardly settled.

My wife and I were discussing this, and we started thinking of how this study is likely to be (mis)used:

I’d really like to use a condom, but I want to make you happy. Really, I’m only doing it for you.

I notice you’ve been down the last few days. I think we should stay in your apartment all weekend for some intensive anti-depressive therapy.

I know you’re gay, and I can really respect that, but in the interest of your emotional well-being I think you need to broaden your horizons.

There’s a part of the study they didn’t publish; the best effects are achieved when the semen is taken orally.
