"Holely rusted metal, Batman!" There's a new Batman show coming to the WB!

So has anyone else heard of this before? Birds of Prey is supposed to start this fall on the WB. It’s not a live action version of Batman Beyond <pouts because it’s the only batman thing I really enjoy> but I guess it’ll do because it sounds fairly promising. Does this have any connection to a comic, or did they pluck it from thin air?

Yes, there’s a comic.

But the warped version described in the article you tried to link to sounds as if it really bites.
Won’t last 2 weeks. Fanboys will drown them in hate mail.

Sounds AWFUL but it has Dina Meyer so I’ll be watching.

My God!

That’s awful!
The caped crusader flees the city?
“The secret daughter of Batman and Catwoman” (yes, I know, Earth-2, but c’mon folks)?

Listen, the Birds of Prey comic is a very simple idea. A kick-ass martial artist (Black Canary), and a parapalegic hacker (Oracle) join forces to fight the forces of nastyness.

That’s it. You don’t even have to mention Batman, let alone rub his good name in the dirt like that. Flees Gotham. Please.

The comic worked because of the unique character interaction, and the best realized superheroines in mainstream comics. The characters didn’t even meet in person until, what, issue 18?
Chuck Dixon must be rolling in his grave. :stuck_out_tongue:

Batman would NEVER flee Gotham City. Hell, if the Joker killed Catwoman, he’d be MORE likely to stay, just to capture the Joker once and for all.

Crap crap crap crap… I don’t even like DC comics and I know it’s crap.

They over complicated the premise. They want another Smallville and what they are going to get is another Witchblade.

Oh, fuck. Kill me now, before it sucks any worse. Hey, maybe they’ll have Adam West as the Batman-in-hiding … :smack:

I’m not saying that the show won’t work (although it probably won’t), but the plot as described just doesn’t make any sense. The Dark Knight would never flee – he’d die trying to get the Joker, but he’d never flee. His daughter with Catwoman wouldn’t be the right age to team up with Barbara Gordon. The idea of a psychic sidekick doesn’t fit well with what I know of Batman continuity (the exceptions are the empathic healer from Knightfall, and the full-fledged sorcery of Ras-al-Ghul ).

This is just another example of poonanny programming. Flash enough young ass on the screen and the fanboys will line up. Any message of empowerment that women could get from this show is co-opted by the lame premise.

That sums it up so well it’s depressing.

sigh The sad thing is, they could have just made the show a straigt paint-by-numbers buddy program. It would have been bad, sure, and not particularly true to the source.

But the WB is far to “smart” to do that. This is what we get instead.

I liked it the first time around, for one season, when it was called Dark Angel

BoP, the comic, came first. Dark Angel is only superficially similar, BC isn’t a genetically enhanced super-soldier (or whatever Alba is supposed to be), for one thing.

I think the “crippled techie sidekick” has been done several times, but never better than BoP, where Oracle was portrayed as an equal to the able-body superheroine, while not denying her disability or opting for an easy magic or technobabble cure. It was a fun read.

Have you seen the descriptions of the other shows coming out this fall? By comparison to some, this show sounds like high art.

So, three chicks hang out in a clock tower…

Sounds like a cross between the Spice Channel and Gargoyles.

They’re calling batman’s daughter “The Huntress”. Maybe I’m I mistaken but I remember a DC comic from the early '80’s called the Huntress. She wasn’t Batman’s daughter in fact I seem to think she existed at the same time.

In any event, the actress they’ve picked doesn’t look like she can pull of super hero with a straight face. The previews I’ve seen look awful. Good thing WB already has a midseason show in the can. They’ll need it.

Now SPOOFE’s version sounds much better.
