Holy Crap, Quiznos hired Rathergood to do a commercial.

OK, a point of clarification first. The new Quizno’s mascots are the Spongmonkeys. Says so right on Joel Veitch’s site.

Overall, I’m actually glad that people who devote a lot of time to Flash animation are starting to get some attention. Jonti Picking, of W&B fame, landed some spots on MTV(UK) a couple of years ago, and he’s just done a series of adverts for the British dairy firm Anchor, using Weebl-style cows.

Specifically, however, I think there are better people out there to use than Joel Veitch. I’ve looked at a lot of his stuff on rathergood and it seems to be all the same thing - chopped up photographs of animals singing songs, sometimes other people’s and sometimes his own. (Although I really dug “Immigrant Song”.) Jonti is creating completely original material - both W&B and other stuff, and at a consistently higher level of quality. - compare the quality of"Badger Badger" and “Scampi” with “Kenya”. Same for Los Bros Chaps - their latest stuff is light years beyond what they first came out with. If either of them had landed the Quizno’s contract, I’m sure they would have come out with something really incredible. (Personally, I would hope the Chapmans wouldn’t use Strong Bad or Homestar in ads.)

So yeah, I got a quick chuckle of recognition when I saw the Quizno’s ad last night - “Hey, it’s the Spongmonkeys!” but that was quickly overridden by the realization that I don’t like them, or Joel Veitch’s work, all that much. Quizno’s could have done better.

It’s kind of wierd, but I like it. Nice to see someone at least trying to do something different. I’m sort of entranced by the bizarreness of the ads.

My favorite Quizno’s ad was about the invention of pants though…
“you are afflicted with the legs of a goat!”
“No, these are PANTS.”
“I fear pants…”
