There’s a time and a place Vinyl. This wasn’t either. Tsk tsk. ![]()
That being said, I still have an uber crush on ya! You’re still my fave poster on this board by far.
But still out of line with your last post man…![]()
I thought it was pretty funny ![]()
I’m imaging it from the emergency responder’s point of view and that is one complicated mess. Truck smashing building, small fire, possibly entrapped persons, multiple wounded victims all in a building in danger of collapsing.
It is sad that one died but I am honestly surprised there were not more fatalities.
It won’t let me read page three.
Yikes. I know Enterprise Rent-a-car will send their cars to you, but this is ridiculous!

It turns out the single fatality was the bartender, Amanda Bush (not someone I know). The article now says that the driver was traveling at 40-50 mph. That stretch of road comes right after a significant journey downhill, but the speed limit is 30. He’s been ticketed for inadequate brakes and because his truck was too long (I didn’t know this was a law).
The truck has been removed and the area fenced off. The building may be salvageable. The mayor said, “If this were 40 minutes later, an already tragic scene would have been far worse,” which is absolutely true.
No idea how to find it, or even if it’s possible to find, but there’s a somewhat famous traffic camera video of a circus truck getting stuck amongst some roadside trees because it’s too long to negotiate a 90° turn.
Couldn’t the driver have downshifted to slow down even if the brakes failed? It wouldn’t stop it completely but it should slow it down significantly.
I grew up in Ithaca and have been wondering how the driver got so far up east state without running into other cars before getting to that right at Aurora. Must have had all green all the way down the hill since turning off Mitchell…I cant remember, but I think the lights are still timed. It seems like i recall they were timed going up east hill, so yeah they must be. Also something more must have happened, because any truck should have stayed on 79 onto Seneca. I wonder if he already knew he was in trouble while still coming down east hill.
My mom tells me a story from before I was born where a truck driver with bad brakes drove into the gorge or something and died, instead of driving into downtown, when he realized his breaks were out.
I’m really glad OP that you were ok and my heart goes out to the bartender who lost her life.
In my defense, the confirmation of death and serious injury came (almost immediately) after my stupid joke, in this thread and in the now updated article. But yes, I look like quite the asshole.
It’s probably not that the truck was too long to be on the road, but that it was too long to be on THAT road. There are trucks that are only supposed to travel onSTAA* routes. As an example, here are the STAA routes in Stockton.
A large truck found on any other street would be fined even if there was no accident. Non-STAA streets don’t have enough room for turns and the asphalt isn’t thick enough to handle that kind of weight on a regular basis.

Eh, I thought it was funny.
