Honestly, I really don’t think Republicans think this will benefit the country. I think they just know it will benefit their paymasters, and to be honest I don’t think they even thought this as far as you have. Trump nominated her because she paid him to, nothing more and nothing less. Republican senators confirmed her in most cases because she paid them to, and in some cases because they’re not going to cooperate with Democrats whether it hurts the country or not.
I think it probably is true that SOME of them voted for DeVos because she’s a religious fanatic, they’re a religious fanatic, and so they see a fellow traveller in her. But that’s not as many of them as one might assume.
As to why anyone would support DeVos, I would assume they’re either stupid or a religious fanatic.
