Holy shit, DeVos was confirmed

Probably the most ignorant, useless, worthless cabinet nominee ever, and those spineless Republicans lined up behind the liar-in-chief to nominate her. Jesus Christ, Republicans are pathetic and weak. Fucking disgusting.

Her family has contributed $200 million to Republicans; what other qualifications does she need?

You seem surprised.

Literally none, apparently.

How could someone of good judgment support her? Are there really so few Republicans who can consider the good of the country over politics?

Yeah, I’m surprised. My already low opinion of Republicans apparently wasn’t low enough.

Since they routinely put Party over God, Country comes in a poor third.

Ugh. Yeah Republicans can’t claim they care much about the children, putting her in charge of the educational system.

How to put this…they are considering the good of the country, in their way. Their way is to fight liberalism on all fronts, and education is a big part of that. I would say that there are very few Republicans at this point who aren’t committed to that idea.

I’m a registered Republican but couldn’t vote Trump in good conscious. Not by a long shot. I can’t imagine the howling that would come from elected Republicans if the Dems nominated and confirmed such unqualified people for cabinet positions. Watching Spicer, Conway, Pence and all the others try to justify what is going on is sickening, a fucking disgrace. The elected officials don’t have one ball between them. I suspect they will pay dearly in 2018. At least I hope and pray that’s the case.

I’m not convinced the VP should constitutionally be able to break a tie on a position requiring Senate approval. It just seems outside the spirit of things.

(post shortened)

What did you expect? This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has been listening to all sides of the argument. The Democrats do not have the votes to prevent the DeVos confirmation. Whining about it won’t change the vote count, but you’re free to do so.

We the voters have spoken. During JugearS Obama’s reign, the Democrats lost control of both houses of the U.S. Congress. The U.S. Senate votes for, or against, the nomination of cabinet members, and, as usual, the VP is the tie-breaker. The Democrats did not have the votes to make things happen their way. That’s why elected Democrats desperately spent last night boring each other with speeches. It’s the only tactic they had left.

And it didn’t work.

But why does fighting liberalism in education require such a pig-ignorant secretary of education? Was there no-one competent who could play the role?

Iirc, when that rule was created, the theory was that the VP would be another PotUS candidate.

Sessions for AG.

You’re not convinced? Really? Seriously?

Well, if you want to change the rules, you’ll need to start a movement to change the U.S. Constitution. Or run for a seat in the U.S. Congress where you can introduce your own bill to change the Constitution. It’s only a start but I have faith in you.

I understand that the Republicans can basically appoint whomever they want. The question is why they wanted such a fucking incompetent.

Apparently there literally aren’t 3 Republicans who require basic competence in their nominees, and that’s something that should alarm everyone on every side of the aisle.

This shouldn’t be a Right vs. Left thing.

I suspect there might be a competent Republican who could have filled the role. Republicans are basically saying that there isn’t.

My goodness you’re an angry, bitter little fuck.

Except for the fact that it is specifically written in the constitution.

Kindly explain, without reference to Obama, why it’s a good idea to make someone as manifestly unfamiliar with education policy as Betsy DeVos the Secretary for Education.

Then, kindly explain what you mean by “We the voters have spoken”. What relevance does that have to this specific appointment? Is it that you think any nomination Trump makes simply has to be the will of the voters because Trump won the election? If so, is there any limit to this principle? If Trump appointed Bill Cosby to be the Secretary for Women’s Issues and the Republicans confirmed him because they’re myopic, partisan cowards, would that be the will of the people as well? And if you’re going to play the popular mandate card, doesn’t the fact that Clinton got 2.9 million more votes than Trump weaken the play?

The goal is not the competent oversight of the Department of Education, it is to return control of education to the states. Specifically the red states. DeVos is such an activist and speaks the language of school choice and education reform. None of this is senseless or stupid from their viewpoint - it’s their plan.
