Home and Away

Baseball question

What’s the significance , if there is any, of different uniforms for home games and away games? Do the majors ‘dress up’ for the home fans, and then get sloppy for opponants games?

In the old days, the home team wore white and the visitors wore gray. Charlie Finlay of the Kansas City A’s, gave his team green and yellow uniforms, which the wore both on the road and at home.

Since then, teams began to have more than one uniform for home and away. The champs were the Pittsburgh Pirates of the 70s, who had something like four different pairs of pants, five shirts, and three hats, and wore them in different combinations each game. Now, teams tend to have “home” uniform combinations, and “away” combinations.
