I love solid color alternative jerseys.
I like the pants hiked up to the knees showing the socks.
I like Yankee pinstripes. But I hate the Yankees.
I hate sleeveless jerseys.
I dislike multi-color jerseys. (Angels before they went red)
I hate baggy uniforms.
I hate the pants that gather at the top of the shoe.
I hate pants in any color but white and grey.
The main color on any home uniform should be white and the main color on road unis should be grey. None of this colored jersey and white/grey pants crap. That really annoys me.
Knee socks are cool. Everyone should wear them in MLB.
The vest jerseys are terrible and should be banned.
I don’t know what the heck Kansas City is thinking, but they should return to their classic uniform. This has been bothering me for a while now.
Basically, the perfect home uniform is a white jersey with white pants, pulled up. The only color should be pinstripes (optional), lettering, knee socks and belt. All other colors should be the same. So you get a basically two-color uniform white plus whatever. The only other colors allowed should be on the logo if necessary.
And the camo jerseys the Padres where once in a while should be burnt.
The vest jerseys are a good idea but the execution is horrible. If they were somehow fitted around the arms (maybe like a t-shirt neck?) they might look better. They just look like a hillbilly muscle shirt now.
I also hate the long “puddle pants.” (I’m looking at you, Barry Bonds!!!)
I actually like the long pants, but not when they have no elastic on the bottom except for the stirrup. The pants that Bonds and others wear look like slacks. When they bunch up at the top of high top cleats, that’s fine. But if you need a strap that goes over your shoes to keep the pants down, that looks dumb.
Baggy knickers that bunch up around the knee look good, but on certain people, mostly shorter players. I can’t imagine Randy Johnson trotting to the mound sporting high purple socks and grey knee pants.
I hate it when teams add black to their uniforms and caps, like the Mets, Reds and Royals did recently. The all should go back to their old traditional caps. It’s not that I only like solid color caps. I like the Indians’ blue shell with red visor, and the A’s green shell with yellow visor.
The Orioles should get rid of the biologically correct bird mascot and go back to the smiling bird wearing the ball cap.
I feel the same way about uniform vests that voguevixen does: good idea, poor execution.
I don’t mind the multi-colors in general. Heck, I even liked the Astros old rainbow unis back in the 1980s. I like the Padres camo unis as a tribute to the many military bases in the San Diego area, but the Padres old mustard colored uniform must never again be worn!
The Yankees home uniforms are the best. Amazing that they resisted change all these years, especially during the 70s, when many teams got funky with color. I guess the idea of Joe DiMaggio trotting out on Old-Timer’s Day in a day-glo uniform was too much to bear (not that he would have anyway).
In fact, I think the Yanks should tone down their current ROAD uniforms. If you look at old photos (or watch the movie “61*”) you’ll notice the road greys were only adorned with solid midnight-blue numbers and letters. When the team switched to polyester uniforms around 1973, they added a blue and white stripe on the bottom of their sleeves, and outlined the numbers and letters in white. Not a major change, but why alter a classic (and classy) design?
And while we’re at it, replace the current shiney batting helmets with those matte-finished helmets that they wore in the early 60s.
Simple, simple, simple. Black and white is a bit TOO simple, I prefer the A’s or Dodgers’ uniforms over the Yankees, and you don’t want something that looks cheap and crude like the Red Sox home uniforms on the 1980s - watch a tape of the '86 Series and their road unis look like they sewed them themselves on the ride to the park. Nonetheless, a good baseball uniform is white/grey with one primary team color and one secondary colour at most.
The logo should be simple, either letters or a very simple symbol. Good logos: Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, Astros. Bad logos: Mariners, Marlins. Awful: Blue Jays. As a Blue Jay fan I am utterly appalled at my team’s hideous, minor league logo. Just awful. The Mariners’ logo would be nice if they got rid of the S and just had the compass rose.
No black unless it’s a parimary color. The black on the Mets, Rangers, etc. uniforms looks stupid.
I’m sick of seeing everyone in gray. Seems like every team wears the same colors now. White with some black (or maybe red) at home, same combination with gray replacing white on the road. Boring as hell.
The red or neon blue or whatever Yankee hats you see around the city are a bit much too, though.
Of course, almost all the changes are to sell equipment to kids(IMO). I like the Yanks refusal to put names on back. All other teams have names on back, right? Well, not the Red Sox.I like the fact the Dodgers went back to Los Angeles on away unis 3-4 years ago. Numbers on THE FRONT are no longer needed. They should be removed, unless they were there in the 60’s. The Brooklyn Dodgers started it in the 50’s ,because there was only ONE on field camera. Only Pirates & Reds should be allowed to play w/ high cut sleeves-as in the 60’s.
I don’t think anyone wears this as part of their standard uniform, but I like the hats that are a solid color with a thin bit of contrast piping around the brim. I know the A’s spring training hats hat that this season, but I think it’s mostly on the spinoff stuff you buy at the team store. I find that to be a somewhat classy detail.
I agree doctordoowop. Names on the back clutter the look and really are not necessary - you can’t read them from the stands, and the players are identified on TV with on-screen graphics. If you’re a fan, learn the players’ numbers! (BTW - I think the Red Sox use names on the road uniform, but not home. A small quibble on an otherwise great-looking uniform).
Regarding solid-colored alternate jerseys: they can work if used sparingly. I think they work best with road grey pants. I’ve seen the Mets wear their black alternate jersey at home games while the visitors are wearing THEIR dark-colored alternate jersey. Makes for a confusing mess on the field. (I think the Mets are the worst offenders in the alternate jersey/black hat/ugly logo debate. They should go back to their 1969 uniforms. They’ll still be bad, but they’ll LOOK a lot better).
Home teams should wear white; away teams should be in grey (although I didn’t hate the pale blue that was popular for a while in the 80s). “Alternate” jerseys may be worn in warmups, but at no other time. We’re talking about the Majors here, not some beer league Slo-Pitch set-up. Besides, they are a shameless cash grab and piss me off, not to mention their ugliness.
One cap per team – ONE, not a home cap, an away cap, an old school cap and an alternate cap. That’s another shameless cash grab I can do without.
Knee-high socks because Ty Cobb said it helps the umpires see the bottom of the strike zone. Short of that, all players on a team should wear their socks the same way – when some guys have 'em high and some low, it just looks sloppy.
Pants should be snug. You know, so the ladies can check out your tushy. The baggy pants remind me of Clown Prince Max Patkin, which is not a look a pro ballplayer should be striving for.
I don’t like the pine-tar build up on batting helmets (Biggio). I know it’s supposed to make the player look scrappy or whatever, but it just looks sloppy.
Hats that are well broken in are fine, but once the sweat line makes an appearance, superstition aside, it’s time for a new one.
I don’t like the BP hats. I’ve never worn one, so does the mesh stitching make any difference compared the normal hats? I have a feeling it’s just to sell more merchandise.
But I don’t think that pine tar build up is supposed to make the player look scrappy, I think it’s just gunk that builds up and no one cares enough to clean it off.
Thank you for this thread. Home teams should always wear white, away teams should always wear gray. NOTHING looks dumber to me than the home team wearing dark jerseys, particularly when they don’t match the pants. You’re at home, you wear white. That simple. Also, the home team wears the team logo, the road team wears the city name across their jersey. Block letters, no script on the city name.
The Reds look ridiculous since they became the Cincinnati Blacks (the color red now seems an afterthought in their uniforms). Socks should be stirrup style, with the pants worn to mid calf. And catchers, leave the fancy mask paint jobs to the hockey goaltenders.
