Home Health Remedies

What’s your favorite home health remedy that you or your family uses?

Heres mine: If you have rough feet…apply udder balm (sometimes called Bag Balm…you get it at places like Farm & Fleet) to the underside of feet at night …cover with socks…

Repeat several nights for smoother feet

Next?

Oatmeal for skin irritations. Years ago I had a persistent rash on my arm that multiple (expensive) doctors and prescriptions didn’t help. Found the oatmeal cure in a book and it cleared it up in a few days–all for the price of small handful of Quaker oats.

BTW, the book is part of a series from Prevention magazine: Doctor’s book of home remedies. There’s a general volume, but special titles for children, men, seniors, etc. available too.

The tips in there rock.

Any ideas for a home remedy for dry, itchy winter skin that I can put in a bath or something (instead of putting on lotion over and over and over…)?

My dad makes a great drink for when he’s sick [sub](great because it works, not because it tastes good)[/sub]:

Boil onion and garlic and carrot (I think) and make a broth; strain out the chunks of stuff and add lemon and honey. Drink this throughout the day and watch your cold disappear.

…because you’re too busy gacking to remember that you have a cold? :stuck_out_tongue:

My Mother told me of home remedies her parents swore by, which I’d not touch with a 20 foot pole.

Their favorite for a winter cold – or any cold for that matter, was a glob of goose grease mixed with a shot of whiskey, a spoonful of honey and slurped down fast. She says it was disgusting and I believe her.

Her father believed in mixing a little kerosene with either honey or goose grease, spreading it on a slice of bread and eating it. I always figured he was nuts and that proved me right.

I’m more modern. I believe in the power of chicken soup for a cold, along with major amounts of Vitamin C. I also believe in the properties of ‘juicing’ fresh vegetables and fruits, though the stuff, not being pasteurized or flavor enhanced takes some getting used to.

As a preventative, I consume daily a B-150, 800 mg of E, 800 mg of C, and 1000 mg of B-12, along with various dosages of other vitamins.

I also believe in the healing properties of garlic, which might explain why my neighbors tend to talk with me while up wind and standing several yards away.
