This morning at 7:30am we were sleeping. Suddenly a picture fell off the wall and hit hubby in the head. he yelled, I leaped out of bed, confused. I heard noises in the kitchen, but thought it was the kitties clamoring for breakfast.
I cleaned up the mess, and went to feed the cats and get my day started. I was checking my e-mail when the phone rang. A gentleman called to say he had my husband’s wallet We’d gone out about 8 the night before, I thought maybe he’d dropped it, but the man was from a part of town we’d been nowhere near.
I woke hubby up to say we had to go get his wallet, when I discover my purse was missing.
I looked outside and our truck was GONE! They had taken all the keys to the house, and both cars.
We, of course, called the police. They went to the man’s house and got hubby’s wallet. All his stuff was in it, except the cash.
As the police looked around they said whoever it was, was probably interrupted when the picture fell.
The police seem to think we’ll get the truck back. He got his wallet back. I lost pictures, credit cards, checks and my peace of mind.
We’ve asked a neighbor to park one of their vehicles in our driveway tonight so they can’t come back and steal the Corvette. We can’t get it re-keyed until tomorrow morning.
I’ve spent all day cancelling cards and accounts and everytime I have to explain it I feel a little more violated.
It could have been worse. I could have walked out of the bedroom when the picture fell and been hurt. We’re ok, and I know that’s all that really counts, but DAMN!
Bad guy took the cash and tossed the wallet out the car window.
Since the guy that found the wallet lives a decent distance from picunurse, bad guy probably lives in that area also. I’d imagine the cops are keeping an eye out for the stolen cars.
Maybe you could call your (their) local news and see if they can run a story on it, with descriptions of the cars.
I love what the cop said. Thank God the picture fell! My son recently went through it and it makes you feel very violated. He got a cellular alarm system and his stuff replaced through insurance.
OMG! How horrible! I’m glad you’re ok! Those are becoming more and more common around here. I refrain to say what anyone who enters this house unannounced would be greeted with. But, then, what if you’re sleeping? You can think you’re prepared, but as you said, you didn’t even know it happened until after the fact. Scary! Positive, healing thoughts your way—
The guy who found hubby’s wallet found it while riding his bike.
He said he’d found other stuff in that same spot in the past. The wallet had been on the shelf with the keys.
Joey P hit it right. They probably tossed the wallet as they drove, but my purse had lots of stuff to go through, so it went all the way home with them.
They got in through a door we didn’t lock. My husband thought that’s because it’s a quiet neighborhood and he’s usually a light sleeper, it wasn’t necessary to lock it. It’s locked now.
We couldn’t get a locksmith until morning, so a neighbor parked his car in our driveway, so the can’t get the 'Vette out of the garage. Hubby has the shotgun next to the bed.
I hate that, but for tonight, it has to do.
I can’t sleep yet, I’ll try again in a little while.
I did that before 10am yesterday. We got rid of all of our credit cards last year, but we cancelled our bank accounts and the one gas card we have. The only thing I haven’t done is order a new driver’s license. I have to do that in person, since I have no debit card, I can’t do it online.
Was just going to say that. dumping or returning the wallet could potentially be a way of trying to stop you cancelling cards they have already cloned, but it seems like you are well on top of that anyway.
I’ve always though that that in a just world people convicted of burglary should have all the stuff from their own home piled up and burned in front of them, I understand why that can’t happen in actual reality, but dreams of revenge are always nice.
Is there anywhere else you can stop tonight? your safety is worth so much more than your stuff.
I have been robbed while I was at home and know exactly how you must feel (never lost as much as you though).
All our cards- credit and debit were taken except one. In the confusion all the cards were canceled including the one left so I had no access to funds. I had to borrow $50 from my Dad to get by until new cards were issued.
You know that now and won’t let your guard down.
When thieves break in and you are not home, they can take some time and go through every drawer and cubicle. Still, all they can take is what they can carry. When you are at home you need to protect your perimeter. All the entrances need to have something going that will at least make lots of noise when tampered with. As you now know, that noise alone is sometimes enough to scare thieves away. Once they lose their cover, they are more subject to be shot. Your wallet and purse are key items that should be stashed in out of the way places. Make things a little more difficult to find. Make it take time. Thieves don’t like to take time. Of course a dog, however small, can be a good burglar alarm.
Thieves are dumb. They tend to return to familiar territory. If they wanted the Vette, they could have taken it at the time. Sounds like they wanted transportation and to blend in more. Also, they could carry more with the truck. Maybe they had other pickups in the neighborhood. I hope you get it back undamaged. Thieves are often just going for enough fungible items to supply a drug habit.
