I used to date a woman who made cheese popcorn. It was amazing. Alas, I was young and thought that love would last forever and never asked her for the recipe.

My daughter makes it from time to time. She pops a bag of microwave popcorn, then uses the cheeze packet from a box of macaroni and cheeze.
We can still use the macaroni for macaroni salad or REAL mac ‘n’ cheese.
You can get orange cheez popcorn powder at Target. When paired with the butter-flavor popping oil on the same shelf… let’s just say, yummm better living through chemistry!
I use Brady Street Sprinkle from Penzeys. It’s very good.
Look by the popcorn an in the spices for popcorn toppings. There is a cheese popcorn topping. I like to use chili powder which also goes good with cheese popcorn.
I know that Cabot makes a “shaky cheese” that is great on popcorn. And since it’s from a reputable cheese company, it’s worlds better than the faker stuff.
Whatever you do, DON’T do what my dad used to do, and sprinkle Kraft parmesan cheese on freshly popped corn. Your entire house will smell like vomit. Yecchh!
Yeah, *that *doesn’t sound good!
huh, I love parmesan cheese on my popcorn, along with some garlic pepper. I never noticed a vomit smell, clearly ymmv.
I think my popcorn popper has a recipe included. I have one of the kind with the spinning arm and the dome lid. It makes incredible kettle corn, but I’ve never tried cheese corn.
I shall report back.
I wish I had asked for the recipe. All I know is that she made it with real cheese and it was white, not yellow.
I tried a bag of cheese microwave popcorn last night, it was not good.
Reported on principal.
Also reported, but with reservations. PopcornFan’s links are actually useful and a good contribution to two related threads.
Heh. Agree, which is why the “on principal” disclaimer!
Kraft used to make a powdered cheddar(?) cheese. It used to be sold next to the grated parmesan. It came in a green tube with a shaker top. I haven’t seen it for a long time. Growing up we used that on spaghetti instead of parmesan because-- actually I don’t know why. I guess my parents just didn’t like parmesan.
Anyway, I used to put that on popcorn.
Here’s a supplier for various popcorn flavorings and machines to use them. It looks like it is oriented towards small businesses rather than home use, and after viewing every single page, I can’t find ANY ordering or price information, so maybe it’s just a come-on or a front for drugs. Too bad; the pix make me awfully hungry for caramel corn.
Heh.
I used to buy a can of powdered Kraft mac-and-cheese cheese to use on my popcorn, but these days I just shred up some cheddar, toss it in and heat the bowl again for another 15 seconds.
King Arthur Flour makes a cheddar cheese powder, but it’s only available through their website. I haven’t tried it on popcorn yet, but I’ve sprinkled it over steamed vegetables and used it in egg dishes, and so far it’s been pretty good.
