Home made wine vinegar

Is it possible to make good quality wine vinegar at home from bought wine? If so how is it done?

Thanks, Bippy

I saw a show once that described the wine vinegar making method. Can’t remember all the details, but I do remember they had a culture called the “mother” that looked like wine snot. Get a little piece of mother and put it into the wine, store in the right temperature.

I just Googled “wine vinegar mother” and got the mother of all hits…looks fairly easy, and dang tastey.

Thanks for the help Duke of Rat, I had not heard of the wine vinegar “mother” before. I wonder if there is a good way to make small quantity batches, the sold sets seem to use a large barrel. The idea of having a set of five or six wine vinegars for making salad dressings etc sounds most appealing.

Look at most good homebrewing/homewinemaking sites. Lots of them will have both the mother of vinegar as well as casks, books, etc… for making vinegar. Some like Grape and Granary even have the necessary stuff to make your own cheese as well.

Haven’t done it myself, but may one of these days. I’m still trying to get the beer brewing down pat!
