I’ve got a set of kitchen chairs that I have as hand-me-downs, and they are slowly falling apart. The pegs that come from the seat section are pulling from the legs, causing significant instability. We’ve tried putting them back together with wood glue, but that doesn’t seen to be holding (we’ve also done screws in a few of them, that doesn’t seem to help enough, either)
Anyone know how to fix this sort of issue? Or have a resource where I can figure it out?
Make sure you read the instructions on the package and thoroughly mix the epoxy. You probably don’t want the fast drying kind (5 minute, etc). And make sure the joints are clamped (like the straps mentioned above) while the epoxy sets.
Sounds like poor construction to start with. Usually if glue doesn’t work there’s too much of gap to fill. One thing to look for is some stuff that will make the wood swell up. Chair Swell or Wood Swell might be product names. You could use epoxy mixed with some sawdust to form a strong filler material. But if there’s any wobble room or unfilled gap it will just come loose again.
The “Family Handyman: Fix a Wobbly Chair” link is a great reference and the only thing I would add involves using a strap clamp on the legs of the chair after they are glued. A strap clamp provides equal pressure on the legs and horizontal spreaders as the glue sets up.
