Contact a family shelter/transitional living facility and ask for either a tour or for someone to come speak to your class. The experience of the chronically homeless (the people you typically see on the street, representing about 1/10th the homeless population) is fundamentally different from that of the homeless family (the vast majority of the overall homeless population in this country).
