Can I mix Shampoo and Conditioner to make a homemade version of the store bought brands? (Well, obviously I could try it, but would it be the same?)

I don’t think it would work, and you’re better off with separate treatments, anyway.
Shampoo and conditioner have almost exactly opposite purposes. Shampoo removes dirt and oil. Since it tends to strip most of the oil from the hair shaft, conditioner is designed to replace some of the oil with clean oil.
According to Consumer Reports, 2-in-1 combos don’t work as well as separate treatments of shampoo and conditioner, even in the same brand line. The conditioner reduces the effectiveness of the shampoo, and vice-versa.
Spend the extra minute or two to do the conditioner separately. If you find the conditioner is too heavy, try a lighter version, or a stronger shampoo.
That’s exactly how the combo products are produced. There’s no other ingredients than shampoo and conditioner.
If you like the combined product for ease of application, then there’s no reason at all not to mix it yourself.
Of course, the obvious question is why would you want to do that? Isn’t it cheaper to buy one bottle of combination shampoo-conditioner then to buy one of each and mix them? Unless you were just asking the question in the pursuit of pure science, then I withdraw my comment.
The reason I was asking was because I don’t exactly like the scent variety of the the ones offered, like Pert, etc.
Of course there are a lot of brands that offer it now. I like the Clairol, but they don’t have 2 in 1. And yes, I’m lazy- anything to save a couple of minutes in the morning.
Thanks for the replies.
Ah yes , the old 2 in 1 con.
The action of an alkaline (conditioner) is primarily to balance the PH of your hair after using an acidic compound (shampoo) on it.
That’s it.
Oh sure lets throw in a few pseudo scientific phrases and discuss things like free radicals and liposomes and vitamin enriched hydo-carbonated fat reducing nanoprobing antimicrobial super ingredients. [sub](man I would love to see a free radical reaction happening in someones hair , honsetly I would , they wont let me mix methane and chlorine in direct sunlight anymore:()[/sub].
So if you want the main function of a 2 in 1 to be fulfilled just come up with a pH Neutral cleansing solution.
Most conditioners offer other feaures not all of which should be rubished.I’m using tatertot’s Green Tea based shampoo and conditioner and dear lord it is gooooood. Really invigorating and the smell is amazing, real wake up call.
Paul, would you be so kind and walk us all through how that works ?
Em …
well seee…
you gotta have the shampoo and conditioner first right?
Then you need to get yourself an applicator.
Repeat as nessecary.
Presto.
(you tell her I called her an applicator and I swear to god Andy…)
Who: Applitater ?
I’ve got a bottle of that right here! Can I patent it?
