Relative usage of shampoo vs. conditioner

It occurs to me that I’m always running low on hair conditioner. I guess, for whatever reason, it takes more conditioner than it does shampoo to lather up my hair. Does this happen to only me? Luckily I can turn to the Teeming Millions for a poll which is sure to have complete scientific accuracy.

So, Dopers, how would you describe your relative usage of shampoo versus conditioner? Do you tend to use more of one than the other? If so, what are your strategies for dealing with the inevitable problem of emptying one bottle sooner than the other? (Makes it rather difficult to use matching brands, unless you always buy the same brand.)

I chose the first option, only because I do, on very rare occasions, use conditioner. Right now, my hair is pretty short, so de-tangling is not an issue, and that’s the only reason I’ve ever used it.

I only use real poo.

Usually use more shampoo than conditioner, but rarely, depending on the brand, I will use more conditioner. Tis’ a quandary.

I only ever use conditioner when I have long hair, and it’s been years since I let it grow much past the “shaggy” stage. Nowadays I just use an all-in-one shampoo because my hair is strong like bull and doesn’t need special treatment. What I do recall, though, is that conditioner doesn’t really lather like shampoo does. If you’re using more because you’re trying to work up a good lather you might just be using way too much.

Think of conditioner more like a cream than a soap.

Well, yeah, perhaps “lather” wasn’t exactly the right word. “Spread through” might have been a better choice.

I use well more conditioner than shampoo. I only shampoo my hair once a week or so, but I use conditioner every time I wash it (about 3x per week). I have very dry hair.

How do you wash your hair without shampoo?

Fair enough! Anyway, I think I used more conditioner than shampoo per usage, but I also didn’t condition every time I showered. I seem to recall that conditioning every three showers was about the right number to sync up consumption.

I’m trying to use less shampoo, as it’s supposedly not great for your hair. And truthfully, my hair rarely gets dirty…I’m sitting quietly in an office all day. So lots of days I just rinse my hair with water, then use the conditioner.

My hair still looks horrid as ever, but I save a tiny amount of money. :dubious:

I have no idea how much shampoo or conditioner my relatives use.

Umm, are you nitpicking my use of the word “wash” because you can wash stuff without using soap.

I use more conditioner. I co-wash ( use water and conditioner twice a week) and use shampoo once every other week. My scalp is very dry, so my hair needs the moisture and there isn’t a lot of oil that needs to be stripped away with soap.

Since my hair is a couple feet long, I only need a small amount of shampoo to wash my scalp portion but more conditioner (maybe 1.5 to 2 times as much?) to handle all the rest of my hair. I don’t condition the top of my head or shampoo the ends of my hair and it works pretty well at keeping my hair feeling “even” (everything about the same level of moisture).

I use what my wife buys me. I think it’s a 2-in-1, but I’ll have to check the label.

I use soap.

So far almost two dozen people have participated in the poll, but so far none have selected the option “I use conditioner but don’t use shampoo at all.” This surprises me—I would have thought at least a few members of the “no poo” movement would show up.

I use shampoo regularly and only a tiny amount of conditioner because too much makes my hair too soft and flat.

For a long time I didn’t use shampoo at all, maybe a couple of years. Just water and conditioner. Then for whatever reason, my scalp/hair changed and I needed to start using it again.

No, I am really curious, because if I wash my hair without shampoo (presumably this means just rinsing thoroughly with water), it comes out flat and oily after drying, like I had used mayonnaise as a styling gel.
