Relative usage of shampoo vs. conditioner

My usual combination is shampoo in the shower, then leave-in conditioner right before I dry my hair. The leave-in is a spray, and I spray it on my hand and then work it through my hair (spraying it directly applies too much product). So I use considerably more shampoo than conditioner.

I’ve recently started sometimes using Aveda products, and when I do I’ll use both shampoo and conditioner in the shower. I still manage to use the shampoo first.

No, you can’t. Washing without using soap (or some kind of cleaner) is simply rinsing. Wet ≠ clean.

I would think that if you want to avoid the chemicals in shampoo, you would also want to avoid the chemicals in conditioner.

Also, the start of that article is clearly true. If you shampoo more often, your hair gets oily faster. At least, that’s true for me, and for several other people I’ve talked to, including a relative who grew dredlocks which were surprisingly pleasant to touch. When I plan to go camping for a week, I taper off my shampooing first, so my hair won’t feel too gross by the end of the week.It hardly seems like an argument to never shampoo, though, unless you are worried about something other than your body adapting to your regular grooming regime.

All right, then. I have super dry hair. Super dry scalp. So yes, wet hair with water, apply conditioner. Leave on for a bit, rinse out conditioner. I cannot imagine how long I would have to go before my hair would feel oily. In fact, I cannot remember ever having it feel as you’ve described.

Hmm… I don’t think that article covers the full spectrum of shampoo abstainers. At least when I first heard of the term “no poo” (possibly on this very message board), it was applied to people who chose to use conditioner but not shampoo. These people still seem to exist:

I have hair that just dusts the tops of the my shoulders in length. I use about twice as much shampoo as I do conditioner. I attribute this to the fact that while I shampoo my entire head of hair, I only condition from the bottom of my ears to the ends of my hair. I have very fine hair (I have a lot of hair, but each individual strand is very fine) and I’m a natural blonde, so if I condition up to my scalp, it weighs down my hair and takes away all the shine.

I use at least twice as much conditioner as I do shampoo. I have fine, curly, long hair that tends toward dry, split ends especially in winter. In the summer, I wash my hair about twice or three times a week; in winter, it’s more like once a week. But I have to condition every day, and I condition up to my scalp. I also usually comb my hair when it’s got conditioner on it in the shower. If I do it before or after, I tend to rip a lot out trying to detangle it.

This, for me as well.

I have long hair, but it’s fine and wavy. Too much conditioner makes it flat. Too little makes it frizzy. Winter makes it all sad. I’m thinking of bobbing my hair.

I am actually going for terminal length of my hair (it may have been reached in the last 6 months). My last haircut was in 1992.

AIUI, shampoo cleans the hair by removing the natural oil on it, and conditioner attempts to replace the oil that you just sent down the drain.
I’ve found that using conditioner like others use shampoo (apply, work in for a few seconds, then rinse) not only cleans the hair, but leaves it smooth to the touch and well moisturized.

Give it a try - you may save a bunch on shampoo (which I keep in case I get something really gross in my hair).

I shampoo about once a week (or whenever I feel my hair has too much buildup making my curls less defined) and co-wash maybe every other day or so. I use way more conditioner than shampoo.

I buy two bottles of conditioner for every bottle of shampoo, and that works out about right. My hair stylist says not to use the 2-in-1’s, but I admit I keep a bottle in the shower for when I’m in a hurry. I have long wavy hair and wash usually 3x/week. On alternate days I just wet down the bottom half so I can scrunch up the waves again. I put Argan oil on my hair before combing it out, and I think it is a great texture enhancer.

There’s no option for the supremely lazy: using a 3 in 1 with body wash included as well.

I used to use equal amounts of both, but in the last few years went to just shampoo. My hair is naturally soft enough without it, I suppose. Male, short hair.

I went with the last option, but I quite often will use a separate shampoo first, and then use the 2-in-1, as using the 2-in-1 twice often leads to oily feeling hair. But just shampoo leads to dry, stringy hair.

As a special exception, then, I will grudgingly permit you to answer the poll according to your own personal hair care product usage.

I have very short, oily hair. I use only shampoo.

I’m a very oily person. Scalp included. So I usually have to shampoo twice to get the oil buildup out. I use a good hair spray that rinses out nicely, part of why I use it is my hair stays less oily with the hairspray in it. So I wash my hair every 3-4 days now that it’s long again. I have to wash more often the shorter it is. And not much conditioner, a light one and just enough to detangle with a shower comb.

All that said, I use probably 12 ounces of conditioner for each 32 ounces of shampoo. I use stuff from Sally’s Beauty Supply and usually buy a quart of shampoo and a smaller bottle of conditioner. I wash it seldom enough, I guess, that I can get the good stuff since I only buy it about once a year.

I highly recommend Wen shampoo…stupid commercials aside. It works great and no conditioner required

I used to use shampoo every day, and had since my teens, because of my very oily hair. Maybe once every few weeks I’d put conditioner through it. More often when it was very long. Now I just have it mid length and I don’t use shampoo or conditioner. I wash with water only most of the time but some days use baking soda solution, rinse, diluted apple cider vinegar and rinse. Keeps my hair and scalp in better condition than products ever did. I wish I’d heard about it decades ago. I still have my old tube of tea tree conditioner and about once a year I have the urge to have the smell of it in my hair so I use it. There are about 2 applications left.

I use shampoo, but not conditioner. Conditioner just makes my hair too oily. I used to use a tiny amount in the ends to stop it tangling, but it doesn’t tangle anymore even without it so there’s no point. I haven’t (deliberately) bought conditioner for myself in at least a decade.

Today I used conditioner for the first time in years. I’ve been showering twice a day because of workouts lately and I think it took it’s toll. The hair needed a little something extra.
