Relative usage of shampoo vs. conditioner

Hair… I vaguely remember that stuff that used to be on my head.

Why no option to vote “I use shaving cream”?

Mine gets that stinky hair smell if I don’t use a little shampoo. So I use (weather depending) either a little Vidal Sasson original cherry-almond shampoo (it doesn’t weigh my hair down), or Living Proof “thickening” shampoo, which doesn’t thicken, but does make my hair smooth when I want that.

When/if/how strongly you get “dirty hair smell” is probably something that’s specific to a person’s chemical makeup.

I use way more conditioner than I use shampoo. After I shampoo, I slather on a large amount of conditioner, and it sits there while I do everything else. It gets rinsed off last.

So how long is it now?

About 4" past my butt.

I was really hoping for at least the knees.

I’ve switched to wen but before that, I would use more conditioner than shampoo. Shampoo is to scrub into the scalp and smush into the hair and then rinse out. More conditioner is needed to really coat the hair and sit there for a few minutes while I wash my bod. 2-in-1 never conditioned my hair enough.

Co-washing (“washing” your hair with shampoo) is the best thing to ever happen to me.

It took me a while to let go of the idea of shampoo (Won’t my hair be dirty? How will it smell? What about buildup? But I’ve been shampooing my whole life and I’m too old to change!), but once I went all-in I was immediately sold. I have no idea if my hair is “dirty” or not, but all signs of dirtiness that I was afraid of - stickiness, buildup, no bounce, no pretty fruity smell - are not an issue. You gotta get in their and scrub your hair just like you would with a washing, and letting it sink in for a while helps too, and just wash the shine and body roll in.

I don’t believe in Wen because the cost is roughly a jillion dollars and I can’t figure out why it would be a better alternative to any other conditioner, although I will give Wen credit for finally convincing me to try ditching shampoo. Curly girls and frizz misses (frizz misses kind of rhymes), take note and change your life.

I buy conditioner by the vat. When I’m down to my last vat, I buy several more.

You mean washing with conditioner?

I don’t know why it’s better, but it works for me. I won’t say it works for everyone, but my hair feels appreciably better. I used to love Therappe/Humectress and either it’s changed or CVS sells a counterfeit version, but it feels heavy and greasy now compared to wen. Wen is a jillion dollars but I got two gallons when it was on sale in June and one lasted at least four months so it’s $500 a year. I don’t get my hair cut anymore so I’m saving on that and on shampoo. The only other chi-chi item I get is Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum which lasts forever since two drops is enough to smooth my whole head.

/not that you asked

If using conditioner, shampoo is mostly for the scalp while conditioner is for the hair. I have a larger volume of hair compared to scalp.

Depends on the length of my hair and how much styling product I use. Right now I have hair to my shoulders, and use some gunky products in it, so I need more shampoo to get that out. But when my hair is very long and I wear it natural, I need less shampoo (just for the scalp mostly) and more conditioner to prevent tangles.

Whoopsie. Of course.

Hey, whatever works for you! I just want everyone to love their hair.

I use sooo much more conditioner than shampoo. I was baffled when my friend mentioned trying to keep the levels of S & C the same. I order conditioner any time it seems to be a good deal, and shampoo I will begrudgingly accept if it’s being thrown in my general direction. Even though I always use both every single time I shower, which is every day.

Shampoo lathers a whole bunch, while conditioner does not not. I don’t understand how any user of both products could not use more conditioner. I probably use 3 times as much conditioner.

Is that because you use a larger quantity of conditioner than shampoo each time you use it? Or do you use conditioner more often than you use shampoo? I use about a teaspoon of shampoo, and about a teaspoon of conditioner. I use both the same number of times; I rarely shampoo without conditioning, and I rarely condition without shampooing.

How much/how long hair do you have? How do you get 1 tsp of conditioner to distribute through your hair? Do you comb it through in the shower? That’s what I do to spread the wen through so that I can use a lot less than the ungodly amount they recommend. Because of this thread I used even less than usual this morning (but still at least a tablespoon) to see what would happen and so far my hair feels OK.

I use more conditioner, in about a 2:3 ratio (and so I buy bottles in that ratio). My hair is only shoulder length but it is fine and curly and is hard to comb without conditioner on it (combing it in the shower also helps to distribute the conditioner throughout the hair). Also, if I don’t condition my hair it turns into a Brillo pad; even with conditioner, my hair stays shoulder length by itself because it breaks before it gets any longer. I haven’t cut it in about 20 years.

My answer=all of the above. I alternate. Still trying to find out the best combo. When I’m not thinking about it, I default to “normal” amount of shampoo, then a few drops of conditioner worked into the ends and barely rinsed when I’m done with my bath.

I currently have a blah combo of coarse, wavy but sparse hair (thanks, thyroid!) so it’s easy for my hair to look either flat and greasy or frizzy and brittle or both at the same time, somehow… It’s not super greasy on its own though. I spent a week at the ocean and only shampooed once, I think, and my hair looked pretty awesome. Normally, if I don’t wash with something my hair will eventually get that kind of earwaxy smell, so that’s a no go. I plan on trying the vinegar/baking soda thing one of these days.

I have longish, thick, damaged and unnaturally color treated hair (purple, atm)- I shampoo about twice a week, deep conditioning once a week after shampooing, and co-wash all other days. I go through 4-5 30 oz pump bottles of conditioner (and countless hair mask packets) to every 12 oz bottle of shampoo. I’m not really even sure how I acquire shampoo at this point, as I’m pretty sure I haven’t bought any in a few years. But the bottle in my shower is still 85% full, so I have plenty of time to magically gain a new bottle.

ETA: I’m also curious as to the gender breakdown of the respondants- does it play any role in shampoo/conditioner routines and preferences? I, for one, am female.

I try to keep the shampoo on the scalp. I only condition from the ears down. Since I have approximately two and a half feet of hair, I use more conditioner, and I always thought somebody else was sneaking my conditioner until just now, when I finally realized what’s really going on.

I typically use more conditioner. When I used closer to equal amounts my thick, wavy hair would end up frizzier, and my hair always looked greasy sooner if I just used conditioner alone. I’ve found my ideal-for-now combination to be a shampoo with oils included but without the harsher stuff, and a conditioner without silicone-based ingredients that would weigh down my hair.

Not perfect, but it works pretty well.
