Hoodies

It’s about time for me to retire my beloved hoodie. I’ve had it for almost 15 years, and it’s long past time to retire it, actually, but it’s held up AMAZINGLY well.

It’s a Steelers zip-up hoodie from around 2003, and in that time, I’ve bought other cheap ones at Wal-mart that lasted about a year. They’d fall apart, pill up and shrink when washed, what have you. The Steelers hoodie did none of those things. Hell, a dog with chewing issues made a hole in it a couple years back, but the hole never got bigger, even with washing! About a month back, the zipper fell off and that, along with the many other damage collected over the years, made me decide I need to give up and replace it.

I looked at all the tags, trying to figure out who the manufacturer was, but nada. NFL-only labels.

I’d like to get a decent new hoodie, in the $50 or so range, without any sports teams logos on it, if possible. I might not mind a logo or design, I just don’t want to pay a premium for a ML sports team logo. Any suggestions? The hood has a double-layer, it’s a full zip-up, and it has pockets. Finally, I’m both tall and wide, so I’ll need something in the 2x-3x size. Styles that cater to thin people need not apply.

There’s not many places to shop around here besides Wal-Mart and Target, so I’ll need to order from the internet. Since I can’t check them out in person, I figured I’d ask around.

Anyone have a zip-up hoodie they love that didn’t fall apart in a year or three of heavy wear around the house and local stores? No yard work or anything.

No real answer here, but I did want to point out the username/post combo seems…fitting (Ha! Did you see what I did there!? ok, I’ll leave now. In shame.)

I’ve had a Joe’s USA hoodie for several years and still going strong.

The OP wants opinions. Moved from General Questions to IMHO.

I’ve had fantastic experiences with Old Navy hoodies. I’ve had one for about 10 years and another for 2, and they both look the same condition. They are fantastic and durable, thick and warm. I won’t ever buy a Hanes hoody or wal-mart ones, even the stuff at costco is hit or miss, brand name or not. Old Navy is my go to. If you want designs, on them, hit up a silk screen/shirt shop. The hoods on them are typically oversized though, which IMO is better than the ones that only go halfway over your head.

Really? I’ve never bought a hoodie there, but the few things that I have bought there are probably the last things I’ll ever buy there; pure crap. Truly a case of you get what you pay for & they’re quite cheap.
I get a couple of new hoodies given to me every year from events that I do so I haven’t bought one in ages but the few that I did buy ages ago, Champion (crewnecks) seem to last a good, long time.

What size do you need? I have some Amazon and Great Ohio hoodies to spare. I’ll even pay to mail one to you. ANYTHING to keep someone from wearing something Steelers.

I still have my black zip-up hoodie I bought in 1988. I know the year because it has a very discreet Olympics symbol on it. The black has faded a bit, but it is in otherwise very good shape. I wore it almost daily for years. Now I keep it at work for days when the department is too cold for my reptilian blood. It will probably outlive me. I’m pretty sure it came from JC Penney.

Surprisingly yes, they are good (the thicker hoodies) and last a long time, I only buy those and occasionally undershirts from old navy otherwise.

I kind of thought this would be another DOA thread. Thanks to those who responded. It’s hard to tell quality when you purchase over the 'net, so I thought I’d field some opinions at least.

(joking) WHAT IN THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!? Did your replacement pod malfunction? (DonaldSutherlandPointing.gif)

I no longer live in Pittsburgh, and I’ve since stopped following the Steelers when it became evident what slimy, scofflaw creatures they sign (Ruthlessburger, etc). When shopping for a new hoodie, I thought maybe it would be a good idea to avoid advertising a team I no longer follow, as to better avoid ass-whuppings from assholes who follow other teams. Rare, I know, but why pay for the chance? Plus, occasionally, folks will want to talk to me about the game, which is both annoying and embarrassing.

If you’ve got a 2x or 3x in stock, Kopek, I can’t very well argue with the price. That is a very kind offer.

To everyone else, thanks for the suggestions. I’ve heard some good things about the Old Navy ones, but the quality of other things they sell put me off a bit. Plus, does Old Navy even sell things in my size(2x or 3x)? Some retailers don’t want their brands on people the size of billboards, just actual billboards. Seems like they’re missing an opportunity there  . Funny about the Old Navy T-shirts. I’ve been looking for t-shirts that don’t grow holes all over in 3 months. I have 20-year-old tees from JCPenneys. Might have to go back there, every tee I buy from Wal-Mart gets holy in 3 months, except for Gildan’s, which grow holes in 6 months. I’m test-driving some ‘Life’ tees from Jockey now.

I have some Champion sweatpants which seem to me of good quality.

Thanks for all of the responses.

The NFL stuff is made by Majestic Athletic (they used to have a plant near my house). I don’t know if they make un-logo stuff but you can check their website for more info.

I love my Carhart rain defender. It actually does work as a raincoat, well, for about half an hour-45 min.

I am originally from from north-eastern PA and while its a long story I have been a life-long Vikings fan. I have two favorite teams; the Purple People Eaters and whoever is playing the Steelers next. All they mean to me is I can’t leave the house around home games since I live near the stadiums.

They would be XXL and the offer is serious. If you PM me an address I will send one or two your way. If it fits and you like it, terrific! If not just give it to a local Thrift Store or shelter.

Since yo mentioned 3x you may want to check out Kingsize (dot) com. Sweatshirts from them that have lasted so I imagine the hoodies will as well.

Speaking of hoodies: The Greatest Hoodie Known to Man

In Oregon, we make jam out of them.

I have some sweatshirts and sweatpants I like from Russell Athletic and Lands End. I like them because they’re relatively heavyweight fabric (which I want in colder months) and have no logo (or at least only a very small one). I’m slightly curious about the American Giant products mentioned upthread and might order a sweatshirt from them in the autumn.

My wife got me a heavy duty Champion hoodie 31 years ago. I don’t wear it a lot, but still.

Despite Kopek’s best efforts, he could not find a hoodie suitable for me within his hoodie hoard. Back to finding one on the 'net, I guess. Thanks Kopek.

I went past a Rural King yesterday, and since they had Carhartt hoodies on their website, I thought I’d stop in and see what they were like. Unsurprisingly, they did not have hoodies on display just after Independence Day. Might have to wait awhile until cooler weather sets in. Around here, that’ll be like 4 months.

My Champion sweats are pretty sturdy. I have some Russell sweats that seem OK as well.

The Greatest Hoodie in the World is a little spendy for me. $80 for a really good hoodie isn’t crazy in this economy, but it’s stretching mine quite a bit. I did read in the article that they think making them entirely from cotton is a good thing, so I’ll keep that in mind, and look for pure cotton, or hoodies with a high cotton to poly percentage.

Kingsize.com seems spendy without knowing ANYTHING about their products or quality, other than that they are large.

Kind of leaning toward Carhartt, but I’d need to feel them in person. They make strong clothing that feel a LOT like canvas. Not a good feeling in a comfy hoodie, gotta check that out.

Thanks to all who answered.

My Carhartt hoodie has been comfortable for over ten years, stands up to all weather, and is the warmest winter coat I own. The only way I’ll be able to get rid of the thing is to burn it.
