Hooking my dvd up to my TV

So I ust bought a new dvd player as well as a new TV. My TV is one of those Flat-TV with HDMI, and my DVD is HDMI capable as well. The DVD player came without any cable and the TV came with a HDMI cable. I connected the DVD player with the cable to the TV but I have nor sound nor visual.

According to the DVD manual I can connect the player a multitude of ways to the TV - I just don’t know which one is the best. Which of the following connections will give me the best sound/visual??

  • SCART
  • CVBS
  • YPbPr
  • HDMI

Thanks,

HDMI is supposed to be the best. Bu it’s video only. Your audio needs to be hooked up with a separate cable from your DVD to your sound system (which may or may not be a part of your TV). My audio cable is a fibre optic, for example, whereas you could just as easily use RCA cables.

HDMI can carry audio

But many devices don’t use it foir that.

If the DVD player and display are set for HDMI, you should get at least video.

SCART is the best system for both sound and vision. Be sure to buy a lead which has individually screened wires.

More about SCART for those non-Europeans who haven’t heard of this type of connector.

The cable that came with the TV has a Type A HDMI socket on one end which connects to the TV and three colored (blue, green and red) male plugs which connect to the DVD player. So I matched the red male part with the red female part on the DVD player etc. I ran through all menu options and channels on my TV but still no sound or visual…

The blue/green/red RCA plugs are for component video (also known as YPbPr), and require all 3 of the connections for video to be transmitted to the TV. If your DVD has a set of red/green/blue RCA female jacks, you should connect to those.

However, it sounds from your description that you have a set of yellow/red/white RCA jacks on your DVD, which are for Composite Video/Right Audio/Left Audio respectively. This will not work with your HDMI cable.

My DVD player has both - I connected the red/blue/green male parts with the red/blue/green female parts on the dvd. There’s a separate section with the yellow/red/white female parts on the back as well. So I matched them up correctly colorwise.

It sound like that cable is a composite----> HDMI cable. It won’t carry sound. You’ll need separate audio cables. Make sure the TV is set for an HDMI input, and the DVD is set for composite output.

Thanks I’ll give that a try. I’ll swing by an audiostore tonight on my way home and get one and try it. Will post tomorrow with the results.

Strike composite, and substitute component in my post above… got 'em mixed up again!

Sorry, I misread. I thought that you were connecting only red to red. I must have missed the “etc.”

It sounds like you are missing something in the TV settings. You should have a setting for “Input” or something similar that can be toggled between Video 1/Video 2/Antenna or some other similar settings. The “Antenna” mode will allow you to select channels, and the other modes will be for the various connections on the back of the TV.

As others have mentioned, you will also need separate cable for your audio. Typically you should have red/white RCA plugs on both TV and DVD for your audio.

As you’ve got the SCART option why not use that? It’s much simpler.

Well what I have read so far HDMI seems to be the successor to SCART, and since my tv is capable of it I might as well use it. To me it’s like having a tapedeck and cd player on your stereo but you only use your tapedeck cause you can’t figure out how to get a cd to play. If the upgrade is there why not use it…
