"Horseshoes," anyone?

I’ve seen a couple of references to some foodstuffs called “horseshoes.”

It seemed that it is some really decadent form of cheese fries.

I as an avowed cheese-fries fanatic would like more info.

Where? What restaurants? Describe, please.

Oh, be still my beating heart.

Mjollnir, a horseshoe is the crowning achievement of cuisine for my hometown, Springfield, IL. It’s basically the following:

a piece of toast

your choice of meat-basic is a hamburger, but other choices include chicken patties, ham, shrimp, bacon, turkey, and there’s even a breakfast variant

topped by fries

topped by cheese sauce.

There’s actually a ponyshoe, which is built on one piece of toast, has one serving of meat, and fries and cheese enough to cover it. A horseshoe is generally double this.

The only place to get one at a restaurant is here in Springfield (actually, I’ve found one other, in Carbondale, but Springfield is easier to find and has better recipes). It’s a big deal; people take their cheese sauce recipes very seriously, and there’s a contest of sort for this dish alone in the late fall around here. Making one yourself isn’t a real problem though; there’s a lot of stuff to cook, but it’s all simple enough to make.

Truck on out here for the meeting if you can; D’Arcy’s, where we’re meeting, has some awesome ones. It’s kind of a matter of pride for us-DavidB and I just had 'em for lunch today.
