Hostage situation, the unthinkable

It is unfortunately a part of life that some people coerce and are down right mean and evil to other people, and it is unfortunate that some people on this board may have experience something like this or know someone who it happened to. What I am getting at is something that I saw on TV about a month ago. To make a long story short, it was regarding a guy (in his 20’s some) who’s girlfriend broke up with him and he wouldn’t take that for an answer. He wanted to take retribution on her. The girl lived at home yet and the guy decided to plan out almost an invasion and waited for the father to be gone on a business trip. Late in the afternoon he entered the residence thinking she was home when it was just her mother and younger brother (i think the mother was 40s or 50s and the brother was a teenager). This is when he took the two hostage while he waited for his ex to return (which was a long time). Eventually the two were let go while being terrified and tortured.

The point of my post is to for one inform people to be careful but also to know what to do in a situation like that. Any imput is great. Also let me pose this question to everyone without answering it, but in a situation like this, when a hostage taker asks for tools, such as “do you have any rope” what is his intent to the hostages?

There is no single, factual answer to this question that will apply in all situations. Perhaps a mod can move this thread to a better forum.

Moved to In My Humble Opinion where you may get an answer.

Rope is usually used to tie things. In a hostage situation, these things would be people. One might just tie the hostages’ hands to allow the them to move about freely but hamper their ability to fight back. Or, one could use rope to completely immobilize hostages. It varies by availability of said rope, hostage cooperation, and other factors.

“Need answer fast!”

I almost, but not quite, pity the soon to be deceased hostage taker-wanna-be. There are two women in Oak’s life. Oak-mom, and The Druidess. Oak-mom is an excellent shot, has a concealed carry permit, and has ready access to multiple firearms, including a couple of her own.

The Druidess has two large dogs, will likely soon have access to any self defense items she may find lying around my house between my ill-fated boating excursions, and a boyfriend that weighs in at 250 pounds of bad attitude. She’d likely be kinder to the criminal than I would be, but it still ain’t gonna end well for him.

The best thing to do is to get out of the house and soon as a hostile person (or a person who might be hostile) enters it. Then call the police. If someone is actually pointing a gun at you, use the Gandhi option. Don’t fight back but don’t cooperate. Just walk away, and the criminal will very rarely shoot.

The physics of a gun is that it fires in one linear direction at a time. One gun can be as dangerous to multiple people to the extent of the speed that it can load the next round, the # of rounds it still holds, and the speed which it can be swung around re-aimed and re-fired. Sadly, the best way for a group of people to survive a crazed intruder with one gun is for all of them to move away from him as quickly as they can and all in different directions. It has to be fast enough that he can’t cant re-aim & re-shoot to get everyone before most of the people are out of sight range / shooting range. People would have to literally scatter like marbles dropped on a hard-wood floor and not stop or go back for anything or anyone if they wanted to live.

Or.

If everyone in that room would on cue jump him at the exact same time and not stop even if there are gun shots, even if there is screaming, they might wrestle the gunman to the floor. A person on average weighs 1-2 hundred pounds. With three people hanging on him, beating on him, even if he bench presses 300 lbs, he will eventually trip and fall down. The best running backs in the NFL will go down once 3 or more people are on them. Its how the LIRR shooter was tackled & taken down.

One you are tied up, once rope comes into play, he/she can kill you… all of you… at their leisure. :frowning:
