ETA: for those of you who evidently aren’t getting it–this would be you, DtC–the point is not whether a topic, or hobby, may be judged intrinsically silly by bystanders; the point is that a thread discussing a topic, or hobby, on the Straight Dope Message Board, is, according to the rules, entitled to be accorded respect by bystanders, which would include not posting snotty, snide, inane, or mocking remarks in the middle of said hobbyists’ discussion.
I’d add the slight caveat that the rule is particularly strong in MPSIMS, the most social forum on the board. Ivan’s comments were mostly inappropriate for the forum.
That discussion is, uh, interesting though I’m not prepared to accept that furrydom can be dismissed as a mere hobby, or at least not for a lot of folks. And my eyeballs just about rolled clear in back of of my skull over even some of the tamer chat in the MPSIMS thread. People can do whatever the hell they want as long they don’t harm others or clog traffic in passing lanes. More power to 'em, long may they way but this being the Dope and all, we’re still allowed to think they’re ridiculous. I rank furries somewhere down with Scientologists, though they’re more pathetic than dangerous.

Ah, the ‘making up shit about people’ route. This is going to go great.

Oh, what the hell, I’ll take it. Maybe it’ll liven up my image around here!

I did ask first. I’m just trying to get an idea of the sort of numbers I’m up against. It’s easy enough to weed out who’s who in the original thread, but I was hoping to see if they had a militant branch. I’ll go with…er…neutral for yourself, Marley23. Am I right?
p.s **‘neutral’ **means ‘doesn’t give a damn’, as opposed to ‘straight’, which means a little unnerved.

Ivan, you’re hopelessly outnumbered. Forget furries, pal. They aren’t your problem. It’s you vs. anybody with a lick of sense.
I’m not sure what either of you mean, but here’s my guess at the demographic so far;

Are “furry” and “straight” mutually exclusive, or is this just a guess at dominant tendencies?
I’m not a furry, though I started a thread about a CSI episode that discussed them.

Wow…I thought you were joking. If you really think it’s important to know who’s who, I suggest you go back to the other thread…and read for comprehension this time.
Not to pile on (well, yes, actually; specifically to pile on), but why use the word “straight” to mean “[is] a little unnerved [by furries]”? That would appear to be at odds with other uses of the word (e.g., in its most common sexual use (to denote heterosexuals), straight people are not necessarily unnerved by non-straight people).

Straights, i.e. right-thinking people, should properly be unnerved and suspicious of the [del]queers[/del] furries.
Of course, this misses the whole point in the other thread that the whole business isn’t just about sex. But you can’t make as much fun of that, so it’s off to the races he goes.
It’s entirely exclusive. “Furries” like sexy animals and dressing up, ‘straights’ get a little creeped out by the passion involved.

By those definitions, I’m neither furry nor straight.
Not you, doof: Hostile Dialect. In light of his posts to the recent “asexual” thread, clearly he’s so humourless about his gayness that he can be set off by with the slightest effort. He’s the unexploded World War One munition of queerdom.
