Do you think you are any less open to scorn than “Trekkies” or any other grown-up that over-indulges in a fictionalised world, to the point of ridicule by his fellow man and woman? You threadshat and HD responded much nicer than I would have, had I gotten to your post sooner. It’s not about sensitivity, it’s about RESPECT. (Google it, I’ll wait.) So you don’t understand furries; most people don’t. Hence, you know, the thread dedicated to discussion and learning. That’s what the Dope is for. Why should ANY group of fiction-lovers be scorned, be they furries or Trekkies or anybody else? If they aren’t hurting you, then just leave them alone. Don’t open the thread.

Look, I think the whole thing is fuckin’ weird and honestly it creeps the hell out of me, but it’s not harming anyone and if it’s someone’s lifestyle, there’s no reason to just dismiss it as “shit.”
I mean, if you have some kind of objection to it, at least be more specific. Just because you don’t like it, doesn’t give you the right to trash it for no reason in a thread that’s specifically intended for the people that do like it.
I know, I should have put quotation marks around my shit. I didn’t mean ‘shit’, as in excrement, I meant shit as in “shit”, you know, the ‘stuff’ that we are all into. And so, I made a flippant comment in a thread that wasn’t dealing in anything of any real importance - although nonetheless, still interesting from a psychological pov - and someone gets all uppity, and has to make a point of my presence in the thread, for some petty point scoring purpose.
I thought I was being the model of good behaviour by bringing my injured pride to The Pit, however lame you think my reason may be, and I still think you "furries"are a tad sensitive.
Care to explain how furrydom isn’t “anything of any real importance”? I mean, it’s got no personal resonance with me, as I’m not a furry. But as someone who holds certain traits and ideas very dear, I can fully understand how it would be important to folks like Silver Tyger Girl.
Why not? I think country music and romance novels are shit. Why does talking animal porn deserve any more respect. No, it’s not hurting anyone, but that doesn’t mean it’s entitled to respect.
I used to be a big metalhead with the long hair, leather jackets, studded belts, the whole bit. Looking back, I realize the look was kind of retarded even though I still like the music. I still didn’t go around acting like I was a persecuted minority because people thought I looked like an idiot.
I say, if you’re going to dress like a chipmunk, you have to accept that people are going to mock you.
Look, I agree - it’s fucked up. And yeah, people out to not have a thin skin about it. But really, there’s no reason to just rag on it for no reason in a thread specifically for people who are into it.

Sorry, no linkable pics. That was before the digital age. I have some old snaps around and a videotaped concert or two (I played guitar and sang for a few bands). They’re embarrassing to look at, and they’re deep in storage. My kids will find those videos one day and laugh at me.
But I didn’t “rag” on their pastime. All I did was made a couple of “Shucks. You kids.” kind of remarks, without any venom at all, and next minute I’m being attacked by a rabid furfanboy. At least I didn’t take the piss mercilessly, which is about what they merit. Anyway if those fancy dress wearing fur-freaks want a fight, bring it on…I reckon I could take at least 15-20 of them in a sitting. I’m sure they can’t move about very well in those costumes.
I think the thread in question is a perfectly fascinating discussion, and IMO, Ivan, your inane posts in that thread are all 100% threadshitting. As HD said, if you’re not interested in having your ignorance fought, then don’t bother to post to a thread, eh. Nobody with a hobby, posting in their hobby thread, is thrilled to see a non-hobbyist come in and post, “Eh, you guys are all nuts”, or words to that effect.

ETA: for those of you who evidently aren’t getting it–this would be you, DtC–the point is not whether a topic, or hobby, may be judged intrinsically silly by bystanders; the point is that a thread discussing a topic, or hobby, on the Straight Dope Message Board, is, according to the rules, entitled to be accorded respect by bystanders, which would include not posting snotty, snide, inane, or mocking remarks in the middle of said hobbyists’ discussion.
