Hot dogs: Casing, or no?

Do you prefer ‘skinless’ hot dogs, or hot dogs in a natural casing?

Also: Why is it so difficult to find hot dogs in casings at the supermarket?

Casing, please! I love that “bite” of a good natural hot dog.

If I could only have one type the rest of my life, I’d go “with casing.”

WAG: cost. Shop in higher-end markets (Fresh Market, etc.) and look in the deli.

In SoCal there’s Private Select Old Fashioned Franks. I don’t remember if they’re from Vons or Ralph’s. They have casings, and have a little ‘bite’ in their seasonings. The best part is that since they’re a store brand they’re not very expensive. I haven’t seen them up here. I don’t know if we have Vons up this way, and I haven’t been to Albertson’s.

Albertson’s down in FL stocks Dietz and Watson as their high-end meats, and they have fancy-looking hot dogs with natural casings. If you have access to Boar’s Head meats, everyone seems to love their hot dogs.

Koegel Viennas - the only real hot dog…

Casings. Must have natural casings. The delicate snap of a well-prepared (not overcooked) natural casing is one of the keys to a perfect hot dog.
