Hot dogs: what do you like on em

No fair, this is the second day in a row this thread has bubbled up to the top of the forum around lunchtime.

You can get a Vienna Beef Chicago dog here in San Antonio, but not anywhere convenient to where I work. Damn you all to hell!

I honestly had no idea that people hated ketchup this much…

For me the perfect hot dog is with chili, onions, and SHREDDED cheese. I hate the nacho/melted liquid stuff, the cheese HAS to be shredded.

I’m also lucky that I have the world’s greatest hot dog cart right at my school. And yes he uses real shredded cheese, and lots of it.

You’ve obviously never seen this Dirty Harry scene.

I’ve recently discovered I really like spicy brown mustard and cole slaw on my wieners.

Oh, and on my hot dogs too!

I voted all of the above but I wouldn’t necessarily put on all of them at once. My standard is cheese, ketchup, hot mustard, and relish. If I have chili, then no relish. Sometimes I use mayo. Lately I have been using Tabasco Chipotle, which is good. We’ve been experimenting making various aeolis with mayo mixed with the multitudes of hot sauce we have in the fridge. Sriracha will be my next one I think. The Mister used Jamaican Jerk sauce on one of his last night, and jalapenos on the other.

He also gave the dog an entire dog (you know what I mean :p). Bless him, he’s finally learning to spoil the creature properly.

Well, hey, it’s a dog-eat-dog world out there.

Danish style: Ketchup, (strong) mustard, remoulade (kind of a mayo with pickles), crispy roasted onions, finely chopped raw onions, and slices of pickled cucumber.

My first choice is Chicago’s Dragged-Through-the Garden but I’m 100% ok with mustard, relish and onion + sport peppers aka Depression Dog (the linked article requires fries on the dog but I cannot agree). Gene & Judes is fine with me but no better. I’m not at all adverse to a substitution of Chicago-style hot giardinera for the sport peppers but this probably says more about my love for that pepper salad. I am partial to poppyseed buns and strong spanish onions. I prefer natural colored relish to ‘neon’ on principle. Does it really need to be dyed?

I get a little embarrassed when Chicago people carry on over ketchup on hot dogs. I can see a shop refusing caramel or even ranch but I think ketchup is fine if you want it. The typical relish on a dog is pretty sweet, too.

When I was a kid, it was a treat when mom’s packed lunch was a hot dog(s). She used regular grocery store mystery meat dogs and dressed them with ketchup, relish and plain yellow mustard. After a couple hours in the coatroom, the bun would be soggy and the whole thing was room temp but that tasty dog got put away in no time. I sometimes wish there was a place to get one of those.

Diced onion, mustard and a little A1 sauce.

On a toasted bun.

Here is the best serving suggesting for hotdogs

Anything else is secondary…

A big, juicy, 1/2 lb, mostly rare cheeseburger with a touch of mayo. Hold the frank.

Asked about burgers, might as well ask about these. Hey it is July.

PS I can do any of these combos but often sub in cocktail sauce for ketchup. I also love a hot mustard on em.

These were done really recently

Full, pouty lips.

Sauerkraut! Yum!

I hope it wasn’t me. :smack: I did a search but didn’t see, pardon.

I’m off to grill a few hot dogs…

Sauerkraut’s good. Or, there’s the classic Chicago-style dog: tomato, pickle, sport peppers, mustard, relish, and celery salt. Yum!

I like my hotdog in the garbage can and replaced with a sausage.

Saurkraut and mustard, or chili cheese, or mustard and relish.

Not a big fan of hot dogs. If I have to have them, Ketchup and mustard (very few things I ever use mustard on). If available, chili and cheese. Anything to bury the taste of the actual hot dog.
