Hot Fuzz

I hope it’s okay that I’m bumping this, as I didn’t see any more recent threads about this film since its American release, but this one seemed still a bit new to start a whole new one. I will spoiler some stuff in here since the Title doesn’t say unboxed spoilers.

Fantastic film! I adore Simon Pegg, loved seeing him in a different type of role than those I’ve formerly caught him in, and I really enjoy the dynamic between him and…the other fella, whose name escapes me right now but whom I will forever and always refer to as “Ed”.

The gun violence was spectacularly over the top, soundtrack was good, murder mystery was fun and actually kept me guessing! Though, as it turns out, I was correct because…

At some point or another during the whole film, I was like “It’s that person! No, wait, I think it’s that person!” and it turned out to pretty much be all of the people I guessed.

My only complaint would be the film style at some points, with so much jumping around, close zoom-ups and loud noises, I found myself getting dizzy. I’m probably just getting old.

Oh, and what I wasn’t expecting was…

the great gore!!! Holy mother of pearl, that falling-church-roof scene got our audience out of their seats, let me tell you. I think I heard about fifty voices chorus: “NICE!”

Favourite exchange (paraphrased):

“I left him in a freezer.”
“Did you at least say ‘Cool off’?”
“No…oh, but earlier I threw a stuffed monkey at him and said ‘Play time’s over!’”

I thought it was great. Loved it more than Shaun, even. I like how the first half acts as a sort of pastiche of those types of movies while the second half turns into an over-the-top tribute to them.

I’m going to see it this weekend. I saw the trailer for it before 300 and it looks hilarious. Big Shaun of the Dead fan too.

I saw a review that said that the movie was 20 minutes too long and that there were long stretches where you just sat waiting for a punch line.

Nailed it. Occasionally lots of fun, sometimes over the top, a few too many times too smug about itself. (A few things were obviously jokes that Brits would get and I didn’t. Can’t fault them for that, but didn’t help me any.)

I liked it and it was certainly very well done. I just wouldn’t pile on any superlatives.

It was a lot of fun, but I lived in a small English town (not quite as small as Sandford, but close) for a year, so I could appreciate some of the more gentle jibes at British Rustic sensibilities. Not as good as Shaun but still very inventive and never boring, plus a truly fantastic cast: Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine, Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, Paul Freeman (Belloq in Raiders), Martin Freeman (from the UK Office), Billie Whitelaw, and the Equalizer himself, Edward Woodward. Lots of great throwaway jokes that payoff much later, and violence that’s crazy & OTT without being excessive (in a vulgar or boring way). It probably won’t connect completely if you’re unfamiliar with the visual language of American action films (which it emulates to a farcical tee), so not for everybody, but I had a good time.

I saw this a few weeks back at a screening where Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost were in attendance. They answered a few questions after the movie and were all around nice, witty guys. Edgar did mention that in each of the screenings they could tell when Angel kicked the old woman in the face as the audience would go nuts.

I’m curious…did your theater audience react the same? I’m pretty sure I cheered

Yes, we certainly did. And there was a solid round of applause after it was over. Most entertaining movie I’ve seen in quite some time. I’d recommend it to just about anyone.
