For years, the bottle of the Kroger brand hot sauce I enjoy included a plastic insert under the cap that reduced the diameter of the opening thus requiring several shakes of the bottle to release an appropriate amount of hot sauce. The last bottle of hot sauce I bought did not include that insert. I did not notice its absence upon its first use the other day and several shakes completely covered my breakfast with a thick layer of hot sauce. You would think that I would remember this after the first time but apprently my brain is in autopilot mode early in the morning and I have continued to give the bottle several hefty shakes resulting in breakfasts that are covered with massive amounts of hot sauce. This is wonderful! My breakfasts for the last few days have been totally awesome!
Too much ain’t enough.
I have a few bottles opened at any given time. The absolute slowest is my Melinda’s Mango Habanero Hot Sauce. You have to shake the bottle hard to get a single droplet out. So tasty.
When you get to the point where you think of the typical 3-ish oz bottles as single-serving, perhaps it’s time to admit you have a problem.
Until then … Party on!
It appears young @Ynnad is being initiated in the ways of too much is barely enough. The sauce is powerful in this one.
Indeed. Thanks to you I diverted down the sauce aisle today and grabbed three bottles I’ve been wanting.
I’ve recently, on a whim, picked up this nice bottle of Melinda’s Ghost Pepper Wing Sauce and Condiment:
The bottle is delightful. It’s about the size of a Huy Fong Sriracha bottle, but the sauce itself is runnier and just pours effortlessly out of the bottle when you squeeze it. Taste is great, too, and, while hot, not inedibly so (well, at least to me). I’ve been using it as my hot sauce for my “halal chicken cart” Mondays here at chez pulykamell to contast with the cooling creamy white sauce I serve with it, and it’s perfect. I haven’t tried it with wings, but it’s great with fries and eggs (of course), too. I ran out the other day and bought the Cayenne-Habanero version of this sauce, which was okay, but the ghost pepper one is where it’s at for me.
FYI, this is now topping my ‘Must Obtain’ list (which grows longer every week). Melinda’s sauces have always been a winner in my book and I can’t wait to spot this one locally.
If I remember right, you’re in the same metropolitan area as me – I found mine at Pete’s Market. My local Jewel did not carry it, and I don’t think I saw it at Mariano’s, though I could be wrong about that – I just know I was at some other store looking for a refill on the ghost pepper sauce. Facebook now, having seen my browsing history, has informed me of other Melinda’s products in the same 12oz plastic bottle line I haven’t seen. Apparently they also have a Peri Peri Garlic sauce, as well as some Thai sauce. Actually, check out this whole line. Bunch of stuff I haven’t seen yet. They have a store/product locator on their website: Condiments Archives - Melinda's Pepper Sauces
Kroger used to have a Calabrian pepper sauce that was awesome in their private selection line. It was just the right heat, and good fruity pepper flavor and spices. I bought one bottle and loved it, so the next time I bought two bottles. When those ran out again I went to find it , and it could not in about 5 successive trips. So I looked online, and they just don’t list it anymore
I second this (having followed @silenus advice on those two hot sauce brands many moons ago here on the Dope.)
Trader Joe’s is your friend. It’s a relish rather than a sauce, but it is delicious!
This seems like a good time to comment Sriracha needs a better tip as it always seems to get clogged about halfway through the bottle.
I have the same issue with Plochmann’s mustard, the workhorse yellow mustard for us Chicago-area folk. I can’t even make it halfway through the bottle before I have to just unscrew the cap to get any of the yellow stuff out.
Heh, I just picked up Melinda’s Thai Sweet Chili Sauce.
Well, Well, Well. Bitch and moan and ye shall receive :). It has been months since I had given up hope, but…
Popped out of work-from-home for a quick run to Kroger for a pork shoulder to pull this weekend. Went through the sauces area, and something caught my eye. A Private selection Fresno hot sauce in much the same livery as the Calabrian. Perhaps worth a try to see if the same type of recipe is used. However when I picked it up, there behind it was a bottle of The Calabrian hot sauce. Scarecely I beleived my eyes as I carefully pulled this treasure from it’s sacred home. There was another!, and behind that a third!!
I now have three bottles of this nectar if the Gods, and the hope that perhaps it was just delayed and is part of the future plans.
I will second Yellowbird and Secret Aardvark as fantastic, @silenus is spot on.
IIRC, Akwafina referred to the aperture as the bottle asshole when she did the same thing on Hot Ones.
I’m a big fan of the Los Calientes line from Heatonist and Nando’s hot peri peri on pizza.
And this is how we have shortages of the good stuff.
Usually small aperture = vinegar-heavy sauce, but not always.
Re: Yellowbird, the serrano (green) is the best one vs. jalapeño and habanero.
The habanero is my favorite, followed by the Serrano. The jalapeño I could take or leave, though it’s still good.
