Hotel bed covers: any less clean the the lower layers?

I have a friend (seriously!) who mentioned that anytime she stays in a hotel/motel, that she always pulls off the top cover–and doesn’t even want to lie on top of it to watch TV. Something about it being more bacterial or something.

I would think that if they’re not changing the covers between guests, that any layer of cover might be equally unclean. Any point to this? My Google-fu has failed me on this one.

The top cover is generally not washed while the sheets are. Also, it is common for people to throw their luggage onto the bed (onto the top cover) as soon as they arrive. Thus, it is believed that it is a common method for moving bed bugs and other little beasties around. Not sure how true it is, but the regular travelers I know always toss aside the top cover right away.

My grandmother always put them in the closet upon entering a hotel room.

I have personally had sex on a hotel bed with the front desk clerk in an unused room. Yeah, you don’t want to be touching that.

A girlfriend and I once satisfied our lustful urges without bothering to turn down the sheets, and we made such a mess out of the comforter that when I checked out, I specifically told the front desk that I had left it in a pile on the floor and that they’d want to change it.

Um, I should mention that the clerk was a friend, I didn’t just walk into the hotel and bang some stranger.

You probably should disregard that private message.

Yep. I’ve seen it mentioned on germophobe-centric media pieces, like on the Today show, when they’ve done germ-themed travel tips. Toss the bed cover aside as soon as you get there, place luggage on the luggage rack, keep clothes in there or hung - do not use drawers - and sani-wipe the TV remote and phone.

I prefer to believe that no one gross has ever been in my hotel room before me, just lots of beautiful 21 year old women would good hygiene. Makes my stay less stressful.
