Hotels in Copenhagen, early July

I’m planning to drive to Copenhagen in early July. While I’m there, I don’t plan to drive. Where to stay, where to stay? The primary sites I’d like to visit are Stroget and the Tivoli. If buses are plentiful and quick, I can get a hotel away from downtown. If not, a place downtown within walking distance of the sites would be best. If anyone has hotel suggestions, definitely please reply. I’m expecting to pay around 400 DKK/night–somewhere between a hostel and a Hilton.

Missionshotelet Nebo

Highly recommended for being inexpensive, clean, and close to everything! I walked from the train station. Also Tivoli was within easy walking distance. You are absolutely mid-city. This is where the Danes stay.

I met three very nice gentlement when I stayed there. A Norwegian father with his two daughters, a Chicago widower with a Lakeshore Drive address, and a young man who convinced me that I was just the girl to introduce to his family.

The shower was down the hall, but the room was super inexpensive and included breakfast.

I’m booked at the Grand Hotel, very close to Tivoli, next week. I got it quite cheaply (for Copenhagen) through Orbitz. Less than US$100/night, I think.

It’s well reviewed on Orbitz, and I’ll let you know how it was when I get back. (If I forget, feel free to send me a PM.)

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll look at them this weekend. I hope we have good weather. I’d hate to drive for two days in rain.

Hotel Nora. It’s just across the street from where I live, so I haven’t stayed there. Always thought that it looked nice. For suggestions on what to do while you’re here see this thread (that has links to other threads as well). I’m in town in July, so if you desperately need to grab a beer at some point or just need information on anything, feel free to send me a PM.

Stayed at the Selandia in May.

Very clean and friendly. About 5 mins by foot from central train station/ Tivoli.

Just remembered: Danhostel is supposed to be one of the cheapest places in central Copenhagen. If you want (cheap/free) private accomodation Couchsurfing is a great option, I think. Unfortunately I can’t accomodate anyone right now (not enough space, small child etc.), but I know several people who regularly take couchsurfers in. Should make for a great experience.

Choices, choices. The Grand Hotel, Hotel Nora, and Selandia all look good. Thanks for the suggestions. Later this weekend I’ll be checking them out on the city maps to see where they are relative to the Tivoli. Yes, I’m a tourist!

Thanks everyone else for the hostels and couchsurfing. Since I’m saving a lot by driving, I can afford a decent hotel for two or three nights.

I stayed at the Hotel Neptun. It was reasonably priced and very central.

My report on the Grand, after two nights here:

  • Very good location: a block from the central train station, two blocks from Tivoli, three blocks from the Tycho Brahe Planetarium (site of my conference), etc.

  • My room on the 5th floor is small by US hotel standards, but medium to large by European standards: about 4x5 meters, not counting the compact bathroom and small foyer. I’ve stayed in much smaller and more expensive rooms in London and Paris. This room is clean and the bed is comfortable, which are the main things I care about in a hotel room.

  • There is a small flat-screen TV that gets 20-some channels, all but a couple of which are Danish or German. CNN is the only all-English channel, but several others ran US programs with Danish subtitles.

  • The breakfast included with my room is a typical hotel full (not Continental) buffet: scrambled eggs, sausage, cereal, breads, fruit, etc. Perfectly fine, and exactly like the breakfasts I’ve had at a thousand other European hotels.

The only downside is not really the fault of the hotel itself. The location is on a main thoroughfare of the city, and with the window open it is quite noisy with trains, trucks, and sometimes rowdy pedestrians. I always travel with earplugs, and used them both nights so far.

So as long as you’re not looking for a perfectly silent, palatial room with marble bathroom fixtures, I think you’ll enjoy the Grand. And from my shopping, its prices were well under anything else in the area.

As I mentioned, I booked through Orbitz, and was able to find an online coupon that got me 15% off the whole stay, which I think brought the total close to your 400 DKK level.

Good luck.

Commasense, thanks for the hotel review. Knowing about the noise level is important but not on the hotel’s website. I’ll look into that for the others, too.

If anyone’s interested, I couldn’t get into the hotels listed in this post. I wonder if something’s happening that weekend? Anyhoo, I’ll be staying at the CabINN City. It’s supposed to be next to the Tivoli. Perfect for us lazy travelers. Just roll out of bed and voila!

Someone at work told me I need to pick up some kind of driving pass or permit. Does anyone know what he was talking about? I’d hate to get pulled over and fined for my ignorance.

Speaking of driving, I’ll be driving in from the Hamburg area. Google Maps gave a route involving the E47 ferry. Is there a better route? Not that I don’t trust the almighty Google but sometimes it doesn’t know about delays that locals do.

Here’s a panorama of Copenhagen, taken from the top of the Round Tower. (Warning: the file is about 8 MB.) I used my Canon 10 MP point-and-shoot camera, and Photoshop Elements 6’s autoblend feature to combine 12 different pictures.

It’s my first attempt at such a big panorama, and I’m pretty pleased with the results. Although the blends aren’t perfect, I’m amazed at how well the program does automatically.

Great shot, commasense. I think my hotel is just right of the center spire, between it and the brownish rotunda in the distance. I, unfortunately, chose the hottest week of the year to drive to Copenhagen in an unairconditioned car and stay in an unairconditioned hotel. They kept shooing me out of the coolers in the 7-11’s. Damn health and safety laws!
