House 1/30

Right. And that’s a fine line to walk for the writer, lest his character find himself doing exactly the same thing — using his hatred for the idea of God as a replacement for his own thinking.

I’d need some lyrics so as to Google it, but it sure sounded like either Ray LaMontagne or Damien Rice.

Okay, I’ve had time to digest the episode (and now have time to actually post something).

What I liked:

  • the conversations between House and the girl. Some apparently found this boring or pretentious, but I found them quite interesting and engaging.

  • Chase’s “there’s no right answer” when House wants to know what he should do. Foreman and Cameron both argued different positions, but for traumatic events, reactions differ from person to person. Chase was right; you can’t say that doing A is always right and B is always wrong.

  • the Cuddy/House scenes. They have so much chemistry!

  • adding a piece to the puzzle of House. I know that a lot of people hate the abuse idea, but I don’t think it’s all that surprising. I also don’t think that Shore will make it the root cause for all of House’s actions/attitudes. I think it’s merely a part of the reason and House will continue to be nuanced.

  • seeing House have to deal with a patient when not on his own terms, and possibly learning to slowly open up (it’s easier to talk to someone whom you know you will never see again; it’s far far far harder to talk to someone you actually know)

What I didn’t like:

  • I didn’t think some of the situations flowed naturally; they seemed shoehorned in so they could do the things I mentioned above. A lot of the girl’s dialogue was quite unrealistic, which pulled me out of the story a bit. This is the main thing: I like the things they did (House’s revelation, House learning to open up, philosophical debate, etc) but they didn’t find good ways to actually do them. So the good parts are there, but the set up and framing is lackluster.

  • I saw the homeless cancer guy as a parallel for House (both had fathers who felt they couldn’t do anything, etc, yet House is the one who has done something while the homeless cancer guy followed what his dad said), but the plot was so compressed to the point of uselessness. It really should have been either saved for another episode or really really worked on to make every single line count. It just seemed like there were tons of scenes that somehow were chopped out before broadcast.

This was one of the few House episodes that I found really boring.
