I have a Goodman a/c unit. It is the kind where the heater and all a/c components are in one package on the roof. There is not an “inside unit” and “outside unit”. The problem I am having is that sometimes when the a/c is on the compressor will shutdown and the blower will slowdown, then speed back up…and the compressor stays off. All of this happens (ands far as I can tell) without the thermostat commanding it. This started happening after I had someone out to “reset the computer” because the high pressure switch had tripped during a power brownout. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much.
As for the reset needed after a power outage, that is a common thing with A/c’s and fridge/freezer’s. I unplug my freezer and fridge when i am present during a power outage because if the power comes right back on and the appliance was running at the time of the outage the unit will not be able to restart because of the high pressure in the system. Several min. are required to bleed pressures down for a clean restart.
As for what you are describing, it sounds like there might not have been enough bleed down time for a clean restart but pressures low enough that your system didn’t trip out again.
Are any of your lights dimming when the fan is slowing?? I am thinking also on a over-loaded electrical service???
Then of course, This “Reset-The-Computer” well, ah, err, snort, fart who knows???
Thanks for the reply. After the initial problem happened at 10 at night, i completely turned the whole unit off and left it off. The technician did not come until 11 the next morning. So, it don’t think this new problem was a rapid restart problem. No, the lights do not dim when the blower slows down. Could it be heat related? It seems to happen more during the heat of the day than during the night.
What you are describing could also be a motor starter issue.
The motor is no-doubt a sealed unit with the compressor, but it will still have a motor starting condenser or start windings. These starting assists can and do fail.
Also there is an “Expansion Valve” and these valves have a screen(filter) and there could be enough restriction to cause a starting issue but there should be other symptoms as well, IMO
I just reread this. If you have the fan in the on position the fan starts and runs. If the stat calls for cooling the fan will go into high speed and the compressor starts.
When the stat is satisfied the compressor shut down and the blower fan will slow down.
