That is true, and sometimes they do get it right. The worst parts of the show are when they make up storylines entirely out of nothing, like Rhaenyra and Alicent’s friendship, and all the times they tried to make Rhaenyra more of a protagonist by completely taking away her agency when the plot requires something bad to happen.
Nitpick: I think you meant Tyrion, not Tywin.

I enjoyed the episode, but remained baffled at the end about all those dragons. People who had read the books might be able to clear this up. I was confused who what dragon (and rider) was in play. I thought Daemon was talking about Ulf as his backup, and not seeing him, and then referring to him as being back in Kings Landing. Thus I don’t know which one was backup.
Who blazed the south walls (?? was it)? And then broke through the gate? That wasn’t clear. It had a rider and got instructions so it wasn’t Ulf. Was it Hugh, who was wandering about looking for his family later? Seems a bit keen to the one blowing the gates open when your family is in there.
Ok, so Daemon wanted to be a land general so left his biggest asset off field too (assuming it wasn’t him who blazed the gate).
In which case, as far as I can tell, nobody noticed the spare dragon at the back. Which the hightowers marched Ulf to, through a battlefield. Then there was the little squire who got killed. He seemed to be sort of loyal to the Blacks. So that inferred to me he was supposed to be there. But just a spare dragon at the back. Not at kings landing.
So turncoat dragon strafes the field and town, and then… Three dragons with riders fly off in the same direction. Making out allies.
And a spare dragon from Daeron just sort of forgotten about too.
(Also didn’t really have a clue of the main combatants who were dead. Freddie the spider webb, sorry, Ser Gawain the green knight, sorry the nice Hightower, seemed alive and mourning over someone I assume to be Daeron, but could have been buttman (a good way for Dennis Reynolds to go), Hughs family seemed gone from “dunno, war or somethink, not dragonfire”)
As for cast, yep. Doesn’t help the Ae/gon/mond, the Dae/mon/ron, Al/yn/ddam and the fact that there’s 384 listed character actors apparently.
All in all, I liked it. But still need a serious explanation as to what exactly happens, and that isn’t fog of war.
I’m taking this from the show, not the book, and still might not be right. There is Ulf and Hugh. Ulf with Silverwing was supposed to cover the rear of the attack but he was AWOL and Hugh with Vermithor was supposed to be back guarding King’s Landing. Hugh had arrived at the battle unexpectedly and so Daemon was like “WTF? Hugh is supposed to be guarding King’s Landing.”
That was Daemon and Caraxes. Daemon has Caraxes burn the battlements and then the gate.
Daemon gets off his horse, gets on his dragon to throw some fire, then gets back on the horse to ride through the gate.
They teleported. It’s a common mode of transportation in Westeros. But both sides seemed to know where Ulf’s dragon was because each side had some dialogue where they said “Ulf is not with his dragon.”
That shot seemed to be of Ulf and Silverwing fleeing (I assume) as Caraxes is behind them trying to shoot them down, and then Vermithor swooping in following behind Caraxes. I am pretty sure that Daemon and Hugh were not riding Caraxes or Vermithor in that shot.
Daeron seems to be unchaining Tessarion in order to join the fight, but it is at that point Ulf attacks the Blacks so he goes to watch with Gwayne and then Ulf attacks the city and they get caught up in that part of the attack.
Thanks, that makes it clearer, I suppose I missed Daemon getting back on his horse after the attack.
Hugh was probably not involved with the attack just couldn’t stop finding out if his wife survived. And kids. That seems unclear if he had kids (I can’t remember, I’m sure they would have shown it, but a season or so back).
The only dragon with a rider at the end was Silverwing with Ulf, Caraxes was chasing him off because he was burninating his side and Vermithor was chasing Caraxes because he is Silverwing’s mate (you can see them cuddling in a previous episode). Dragons were not meant to be used during the battle because the town was full of citizens loyal to Rhaenyra, Ulf and Hugh were there taking turns making sure the army didn’t go anywhere.
