I intend to give the deliberations of this clown car all the attention it deserves; oh look: a squirrel!
This week in House Oversight.
MTG is very upset that the Biden admin is seizing more than double the fentanyl than the Trump admin was.
She also uses a woman who lost two sons to fentanyl and whose grief is real as a prop to attack Joe Biden. Both sons died in 2020 while Trump was president.
Matt Gaetz cites Chinese propaganda while questioning the Dr. Colin Kahl, under secretary of defense for policy.
“As a general matter I don’t take Beijing’s propaganda at face value.” - Dr. Kahl
“Fair enough, I would agree with that assessment.” - Rep. Gaetz
Oversight chair, James Comer, on Lou Dobbs’s radio show, laments that he can not dig up and prosecute Joe Biden’s eight years dead son Beau, more or less.
I hope someone asked that woman who was President when her son’s died.
That point has been made without using a grieving mother as a prop.
All 26 Republicans on the House Oversight Committee have refused to sign the following statement which I will quote in full:
Statement Denouncing White Nationalism and White Supremacy
We, Members of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, together denounce white nationalism and white supremacy in all its forms, including the “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory. These hateful and dangerous ideologies have no place in the work of the United States Congress or our Committee.
I think it’s fair to call them all racists.
In Paul Gosar’s case, when your family says you’re racist, you’re probably racist.
“Seriously? You didn’t? I mean, they look like bad guys!”
Stranger
The statement seems non-objectionable, but how is it related to the work of the House Oversight Committee? I hate to defend these assholes, but if I was on the Committee and someone said, “please sign this resolution stating people should be able to choose the ice cream flavor they like best,” I’d probably say “I agree but I’m not signing that. It has nothing to do with our work here.”
Now, maybe there were some issues that make the issues of White Nationalism and White Supremacy relevant to their work. But generally I don’t like meaningless political gestures. That’s what twitter’s for.
And WTF, there are 26 Republicans on this Committee? How big is this Committee? I thought 10 to 15 was standard size.
IIRC, a while back Biden was denouncing it and suddenly Tucker was very concerned he and/or the GOP might end up being considered white supremacists.
ETA, tried to quickly find the clip, but I got way more results with those search terms than I care to wade through.
Probably because of the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. The Republicans got rid of it once they took over. Most likely the Democrats wanted it on record whether the new committee was still committed to fighting against white supremacy.
Note that the United States House Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the primary investigative committee of the House. It investigates the government’s activities and looks into wrongdoing on the government’s behalf. Given the unfair treatment of minorities throughout history and even today, the issue of human rights in general and unfair treatment of minorities in particular is highly relevant. If you recall, not long ago they were investigating the treatment of migrant children being housed in cages and separated from their families. So this sort of thing is very relevant. Except the Republicans disagree, and apparently think racism is just fine when the government does it.
I am unaware of the existence, either past or present, of the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Ice Cream Preferences, but if that ever existed I would be curious about their investigations. (Probably trying to figure out who keeps scooping out the chocolate from the Neapolitan ice cream stored in the House freezer.)
Thanks. I was unaware of this subcommittee. That makes sense.
The current House Oversight Committee reminds me strongly of the firemen in Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451”.
