House Speaker Contest

All the moderate Republicans are behind McCarthy. They are all standing behind their nominee as Republicans have tended to. It’s only the far-right folks who are nominating other names.

No adjournment. Count the votes and move on to Round 5. Don’t let McCarthy have any opportunity to regroup. Only give them a break if he withdraws so that they have time to select someone in his place. That’s what I’d be in favor of.

What’s amazing about Donalds is that he’s only been in the House since 2021. He would be by far the least experienced Speaker since the House existed, as far as I can find.

McCarthy was said to be too inexperienced with 5 terms back in 2016.

Santos: “What I meant was that I have past experience installing speakers in a house at my old job.”

McCarthy has threatened to keep having votes, but at this point it’s in the FC’s interest to refuse a motion to adjourn and keep voting. Each successive vote where McCarthy falls shot makes him look weaker and weaker.

Lol

Looks like 12 now for Donalds.

Less baggage, though. Many people hate Jim Jordan because they know who he is and what he’s done. Who in the general public knows anything about Byron Donalds?

On that note, I notice that the former Jordan voters now appear to be Team Donalds.

Maybe, but if he holds at >200 then I’m not sure. At some point the holdouts are just tilting at windmills and stopping the House from doing anything else. Surely they have a breaking point too, right?

Yes, absolutely. But the public perception is only part of the job (and I’d argue a pretty small part). The Speaker needs to lead the caucus and whip votes and do all sorts of things that Donalds has no power base or experience doing. How can he possibly herd this group of cats? Although, to be fair, who could?

Jordan votes McCarthy again. So far no additional defections.

Can I just say as a Republican that the Dems are really looking good here. Biden’s statement was partisan yet presidential and the D-Representatives are not giving the Pubs an easy way out like the Dems normally do.

Is there a particular “check-in” time when a rep needs to be in the chamber in order to be able to vote or can they show up any time during the roll call? How hard would it be for Rs to pull some trickery to prevent Ds from voting? After all, vote suppression is their speciality…

Looks like they found an entire box of long pencils for the tally clerks. It’s on the podium behind her.

The clerks must think they’re in for the long haul.

The FC don’t care if anything functions. They’re looking to burn it all down and get Twitter followers, not necessarily in that order; governing comes in a very distant third. Don’t count on them breaking first.

Did anyone catch what rep-elect Green of TX was going on about?

The roll is read all the way through in alphabetical order, then at the end the clerk will once more read through those names that did not respond during the original roll call.

I’d have to check the rules. I believe you must be in the chamber when the vote starts dating back to the “Disappearing Quorum” that Speaker Reed dealt with once and for all.

Just grandstanding about how awesome Hakeem Jeffries is I’m sure. A few Democrats have been doing that every time. Annoying and pointless since nobody can hear them.

Luna votes Donalds as well - still no new defections and no new McCarthy votes.

Republicans keep saying they want “a change”, even if that means voting for people with no experience or appropriate qualifications whatsoever. That’s how we got the last President.

Their priority is ensuring that they get one of their own elected. If that’s the more qualified candidate, so much the better, but they’ll take what they can get.

None of the Never Kevin candidates are there to become Speaker. Just to siphon off enough votes to prevent McCarthy from getting it. I’m sure they’ll rotate through a bunch of names until a solution is found.
