That voice vote to adjourn did seem awfully close, but I guess no member actually moved the yeas and nays.
Former GOP Congresscritter David Jolly of Florida just suggested it wouldn’t surprise him if they come back and McCarthy withdraws and nominates his replacement, likely Steve Scalise.
Personally, I think it is a bit early in the process for this to happen but who knows at this point.

reporting is mccarthy is not stepping down. he feels he is entitled to be speaker, and does not care that he does not have the votes and will not get them.
I am SO with you on this. It has gotten to the point that I rarely watch any official proceedings. I wonder what the intended purpose of such displays/blathering is, or who it is intended to impress?
Why is KM so determined to get this role? He’s looking like a desperate fool. Does someone have sway over him, like if does not get this role, he may end up with cement shoes?
He clearly feels entitled to the job, and has been focused for years on achieving it. I think that he’s struggling to accept that things aren’t going his way.
It may be he has realized that this will be his high water mark. He pretty much knows by now he’ll never be President, so Speaker is the most powerful position he can still aspire to. If he fails this, he’ll never reach this high again.
I wonder if McCarthy is planning a Jan 6 style coup as a last gasp.
