If a supposedly moderate GOP speaker welches on a deal made with the Democrats, wouldn’t they become a right-wing hero, and retain the speakership with the support of all Republicans?
On my screen, it says Live 3:15 PM, when Kat Commack was doing the nomination.
Oh no you didn’t…
I don’t understand all the people saying that McCarthy should know that he isn’t wanted and just step down.
He has the support of 90% of the Republicans. The 10% who are holding out are the pretty much exactly the selection you would pick out as the very worst dregs of a terrible party. They’re the ones who’ve made names for themselves as human pond scum. Any normal politician would rejoice if they had these Voldemorts as their enemy. They’re basically terrorists, blackmailing their betters with political bombs because they have absolutely nothing to offer, and nobody with sense wants them. If McCarthy backs down, he becomes Neville Chamberlain. If he loses to the terrorists while fighting all the way down he’ll live on gloriously in the eyes of history. Well, as gloriously as someone like Kevin McCarthy can ever hope to attain. That’s why he’s keeping on. Every outsider detests him for going along with Trump, but Trump has 80% of the party. These chuckleheads have 10% of the party. He can’t allow himself to lose to them. I’ll give him enough credit to say that he thinks that the party can’t allow itself to lose to them.
Wishing bad things to Kevin McCarthy is very least a decent person can do. But we didn’t believe that Trump could possibly be as bad as he turned out to be. What kind of future would a McCarthy loss to the crazies result in? This is just a confirmation of the horrors we knew were coming as soon as it was announced that the Republicans won the House.
McCarthy doesn’t want another vote tonight. This should be interesting. I have a ice cream bar for this thing tonight.
Also chip Roy kinda looks like Lenin.
I’m of two minds concerning McCarthy. On the one hand, I despise him, and I don’t think that he deserves to be Speaker. On the other hand, I remember all the grief that Boehner & Ryan went through, and I think maybe becoming Speaker is exactly what he deserves.
I just saw McCarthy on CNN saying he “made some progress” but he doesn’t want a vote. Presumably we’ll see some of those 20 vote for him tonight, assuming he isn’t just blowing smoke up everyone’s ass.
ETA: One thing that hasn’t happened yet, but I really want to see, is a roll call of the yays and nays on adjournment. Hopefully we’re about to see that .
I agree that the neither the good of GOP or of the country is served by giving the craziest a win.
But other than completely caving to them (yet not losing others) he has no path so long as they hold their position and holding the whole country hostage by not letting any business proceed for any indeterminate future is fine by them. They consider that a win too. Ds will not help him win.
So a way forward that does not give them a win that is possible is required.
And that is where the thread had started when this was all crazy talk. Either they get enough in someone else that they agree but little enough that less extreme members of the party feel the crazies did not win, or a candidate who can get support from enough Ds and Rs becomes the way out. The crazies indeed then held their breath until leadership became at least with a shade of blue. No out left is probable.
Yep. I look at it as a bonus. I want him out of politics ASAP, but having him leave politics broken and shamed is even better.
Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I wished the Speakership on a toadying lick-spittle.
The ones that are against him are dug in a bit more I believe, as he lied to them about what the democrats will do.
Why on blue green earth is he still giving concessions?!? Just ridiculous.

Vote to adjourn.
You answered the question that I was going to ask, but hadn’t yet finished typing. Thanks!
I don’t feel sorry for McCarthy. It would be like feeling sorry for one of those used-car lot advertising floppy noodle men used as a regular meme in Better Call Saul.
McCarthy may or may not have a way out. I’m just saying that his best strategy is to keep fighting to the bitter end.
