House Speaker Contest

Only one Republican nay so far to not adjourn. Maybe they really have reached some kind of deal and just need a little ore time to hash out the details overnight. 9 minutes left for them to vote.

If these ballots get into the double digits she better begin bringing fire and brimstone into it.

As I look at the chamber and empty seats I wonder if maybe enough members have left or not returned to the floor that they won’t be able to adjourn. So far it appears this is largely along party lines and there a many more GOP votes outstanding.

CNN is speculating that adjournment would give the Republicans time to work a deal that would see Steve Scalise be nominated for the position. But they admit, it’s speculation.

The vote clock is more of a suggestion in most cases, they normally hold the vote open until everyone in the general vicinity whose vote is needed makes it back to the floor.

They explained it 45 minutes ago. Let it go.

Yes, but the Republican Party has in recent decades operated on the principle of an unrepresentative right-wing minority wielding disproportionate power.

Wow! Votes are closing!

This is getting crazy.

Ah. Confusion on the floor; CNN explains that the vote was closed, and not everybody got the chance to vote. But they also admit those members may not have been in attendance.

Okay, vote is reopened.

Nope, closed again.

A few Democrats didn’t vote, but it looks like that wouldn’t have made a difference. Only four Republicans voted nay.

The house is adjourned. This is crazy stuff.

I shall drink anyhow. The People would want it.

As will I. Cold beer here, and another in the fridge.

I guess when they reconvene tomorrow, it’ll be coffee for me. It will still be morning in my time zone.

Watching on CNN. It sounds like Chip Roy and 10 others may be coming on board the Kevin train. Supposedly McCarthy gave his blessing to his Super PAC staying out of Republican primary races for open seats, which is reported to have been the decisive factor in bringing him and the other 10 on board. The four Republicans who voted nay on adjournment are reported to include Boebert, Gaetz, and Biggs.

I can not see how this ends well.

I can’t see how it doesn’t.

Before this is all over McCarthy will have given away every bit of the Speaker’s power in return for the title.

To be fair, according to the reporting on CNN, what he gave up in this round of negotiations is some of his personal power rather than the Speakers power. But that gets him only about a dozen or so of the 20 that were opposing him. He still needs another 3 or 4, and it’s not clear what he will have to give up to get them.
