House Speaker Contest

Kevin Hearn apparently. That was the joke.

I am voting for Kevin…Hern.

What in the Republican agenda would strike any Democrat as ‘reasonable work’ that needs doing? Impeachment? Hunter hunting? Tax cuts for the rich? The only that needs to be done is raise the debt limit, and that is pretty far in future (and frankly the Democrats should insist whatever poor soul from the GOP ends up as Speaker provides at least 200 votes for it).

What’s with the people wanting the Dem.'s to end this?

Not their job.

It is a matter of math:

5 republicans vote for Jeffries
10 republicans vote “present”.

or

10 dems vote for Kevin
20 dems vote “present”

Five dissenters means Kevin is an 8-time loser.

Somebody from Oklahoma.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered already, but does this process have a deadline in the books? e.g., can the House not elect a Speaker for the next 100 days? Or is there a natural stopping criterion that will force a Speaker one way or another? Can the House function without a speaker?

Onion headline: Incredibly Productive House of Representatives Assembles for Eighth Vote in Just Three Days

No, it can’t function. Technically, there is no House until there’s a Speaker. No one is sworn in; they’re all merely Representatives-elect. And there’s no Plan B; either the House elects a Speaker, or they don’t.

Like many other parts of the republic’s governeance, this process was designed presuming sensible honorable people willing to lose when they know they’re beat.

And the not swearing in until there is a Speaker is supposed to incentivize getting that done.

Now three Other votes. Who is the third? Is it Hearn again, or is it Trump? Or somebody else?

Gaetz voted for Trump again

Ah. Thanks!

Anyone know if Daveed Diggs can fly up to Washington to sing “You don’t have the votes” to McCarthy?

Profiles in leadership from CNN:

“I will vote for him once other people do first”. What a courageous stand.

No, and historically it hasn’t been such a headache at this stage except a couple times. In the runup to the Civil War in 1855 and the next couple Congresses there were major Speaker election issues because new political parties sprang up and there were (actually somewhat familiar) divisions among existing ones.

The one in 1855 went two months and had over 100 ballots before everybody collected decided to go with plurality vote rather than majority. That’s clearly not an option Republicans would entertain today. And things work differently in other ways these days, anyway.

Playing this clip made me feel warm inside.

There is no deadline. In December of 1855 they had a similar problem and they didn’t elect a Speaker until February 1856. So yeah, this won’t even be the longest such crisis unless it gets to March.

I’m wondering how long before the Republicans start accusing the Democrats of vote fraud.

I hope it continues until 2024.

Except that the nation will fall apart when we default on our debt and have to shut down the federal government because the House couldn’t address these issues without a Speaker. Of course, the House may be unable to address them with a Speaker so maybe it doesn’t matter.

This is the vote that never ends.
It just goes on and on, my friend.
Some people started voting, not knowing what it was.
And, they’ll continue voting forever, just because…
