I don’t get that reference.
Sorry. Reversed my math and using my phone makes me awkward. I meant that the orignal never Kevin’s vote present and the others that joined during the first vote go with scalise.
It’s not what I fumble fingered while I tried using this damn touchscreen but it was my intent.
.-deep bow of apology-
I agree with you here; the more inefficient, unresponsive and generally ungovernable the U.S. looks on the world stage, the more the Putins, Xis and Orbans of the world (and their message) benefit by the example. Heck, the “government is the problem” Republican party even benefits, in a rhetorical sense; their gang of 20 is trying to burn it all down because they’re actually bought in to their party’s rhetoric.
Is there something the Democratic Party can offer to some Republicans to split from their party and form a coalition that will truly govern? And can the Democratic caucus hold together over such an offer? (asking for a friend named Hakeem)
Black Mirror (TV Show)
I thought there was an actual change for a moment. Brecheen was recorded at first as voting for McCarthy. He quickly corrected the record, though.
5 No votes, so no election.
Will Gaetz vote for Trump again? And will Spartz vote Present again?
Democrats have spent decades being the adults in the room. It’s how we got here. They take the high road while the GOP delves for mithril and balrogs.
But I can see a path for it. After a week or two of this, I would love Dem leadership to make McCarthy a deal.
“All you have to do is ask Nancy. Live on television. Make it sincere and you’ve got a deal.”
If the Democrats end this, it needs to be “rub their face in it and then hit them with a rolled-up newspaper” clear that they’re saving the day. That they’re pulling the GOP out of its own stinky mess.
Because that’s all they can get. Ain’t no way to trust any of them to keep promises or concessions.
(good lord this thread is moving fast)
ETA: Actually, it doesn’t even have to be with McCarthy. Make it an open offer. Best one wins, voting done via an 800 number.
I’m away from the tv, have they begun the ninth vote?
Time in tomoooorrrroooow for the continuing stooooory of the House that’s gone to the dogs.
Yes, Happy, they have. Now three Republicans nominated: McCarthy, Donalds, and Hearn.
The issue is that the GOP let crazies in at the primary level. Q-anon, deniers, etc. The GOP supported these clowns, more or less to appease to the crazy electorate.
They chuckled at watching how these newly elected (most of them are fairly new, only a couple are old hands) congresscritters caused Liberal heads to explode. The GOP made new districts in some cases specifically to bring in a clown. They recruited these clowns, and now they are surprised there is a circus.
Were those concessions binding only if they voted for him? Or just something Kevin “promised”?
All: it’s Kevin “Hern” by the way, not Hearn, attempting to serve his 3rd term out of Oklahoma.
He’d have to abide by it or face continuing issues for the next couple years. They have a slim majority. If these 20 decide to play hardball, they’ll just stymie anything the House wants to do for the next 2 years anyway or he’d have to crawl to the Dems and get enough of them to vote with him every single time.
It’s not like his job is done if he simply wins the position. Too slim a majority for that.
looks like boebert tried. dang, it her election was so close. i hope this stops her in 2024.
spartz said she will vote present until some votes move his way.
But not if they do not agree and vote for him, right? It was a deal? Vote for me, and you get these concessions?
the jingle for “what would you do for a klondike bar” is going through my head.
what would you doooo for the speakership?
Sure. And then he gets elected with some help, doesn’t do any of the concession stuff, and then what? They block every single thing he tries to do for the next 2 years and let him know it, unless he capitulates anyway.
And they continue their mini-revolution until/unless he gives in on every thing they want, effectively hamstringing him as Speaker. What good is the position if he has no effective power?
Kinda like being married.
The guest speaker and board of director fees are probably a lot higher for “Former Speaker of the House” than for “Former House Minority Leader”.
