Thanks. Maybe she’s waiting until the second call.
It has the feel of North Korea threatening to launch nukes. “We’ll do it! We’re crazy! We’ll do the craziest thing you could think of!”
Um, if my math is correct (isn’t Jeffries getting 213 votes every time?) then the 5 holdouts should just vote for Jeffries, and he’d be speaker. We’d be done here.
Seriously. Call their bluff!
You seem to have posted that the concessions are binding on McCarthy even if the Never Kevins do not vote for him, if instead he gets a deal from the Dems.
My point is that any Concessions made by KMcC are only even slightly binding if the deal with the Never Kevins goes thru.
No deal, no concessions.
the “talking to the democrats” ploy was already tried. that ended up with gaetz talking to ocasio cortez.
should something improbable happen and jeffries sneak in, they will immediately vote to vacate (majority vote), and back to this craziness.
They’d have to find enough Republicans who would be OK serving the next two years and then leaving politics. Good luck with that.
212 votes every time, from every Democratic representative-elect who is present.
(They would have 213, but Donald McEachin of Virginia died in late November, after winning re-election.)
they may have 213 if this thing goes much longer. i believe the special election has been announced.
Let’s say, gawd forbid, that North Korea does launch a nuke towards Honolulu. That being an act of war, we (the US) would need to declare war in order to retaliate. But only Congress can declare war.
We’ve got no House of Representatives, so how could we proceed?
Do they? Whatever concessions the Freedom Circus had gotten from McCarthy were from him, alone. If McCarthy does step aside for Scalise to run, don’t the negotiations have to start over? Suppose Boebert, et al., tell Scalise they expect the same committee appointments that McCarthy had promised and Scalise tells them to pound sand.
Are they just recycling the same nominating speech for each figurehead, or do they try to keep it fresh each time? “The only leader who can unite us is Byron Do…, no, wait, Kevin Hearn!”
Well, he won’t have to move offices again.
“Police action.” Congress can lodge a protest once they get their shit together.
No, I get that, but I’m saying he would still need to do the concessions or it’s pointless anyway.
He absolutely needs a sufficient number of those 20. Otherwise, he won’t have enough votes for whatever legislation he needs to get accomplished. Those folks will not give him those votes otherwise and he’s right back where he started - needing several of them to play ball with him but now royally pissed off at him after not getting their concessions.
So, if he wins, he’d need to follow through on those concessions to keep those folks on board with their votes or he’d be still be a useless figurehead of a joke but with a fancy title.
Am I nuts or did McCarthy lose a vote in this last round? NY Times is show 21 GOP votes against, with 17 for Donalds, 3 for Hern, and 1 “present.” I thought he had been getting 20 GOP votes against every vote so far.
???
Well, it would give them an excuse to do nothing else for the remainder of the term, which is what they really want anyways.
The current count on CNN is Jeffreis 212, McCarthy 200, Donalds 17, Hern 3, and Present 1 (presumably Spartz). Who is the vote McCarthy is missing this time?
Buck didn’t vote (didn’t respond to his name)
Did Hern vote for himself or McCarthy?
While Gaetz may have power within the Freedom Caucus; does Ocasio Cortez have any real power in the Democratic Party? She certainly doesn’t have significant tenure. Yeah, she’s the “name” that everyone on the right loves to hate, but would she have the power and the arm-twisting ability to move any Democratic votes?
Hern voted for McCarthy
